After reading about this movie and the synopsis of the book, this movie sounds really harsh. I kind of want to check it out now. Ebert gave it a low review because of the horrible things that happens to people in the movie. I'm very interested.

I think I posted in another thread that this was one of the greatest novels of the 1990s--Jose Saramago won the Pulitzer for it, I believe. It's in the tradition of Lord of the Flies. Ordinary people are put in extraordinary circumstances as the veneer of civilization sloughs off, and we get to see what human nature is really all about. I don't see how a film can come close to tackling everything in the book, but I am curious to see how it turns out.

So, what, exactly, is the premise of this movie that will put people in extraordinary situations? I personally found the trailer extremely underwhelming and thought the movie would suck until I entered this thread.

Just a quick correction from my post--Blindness won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Did anyone else see this movie? I saw it over the weekend. A real surprise for me. There was some surprising scenes like Ebert said but it was nothing like Salo. Performances were good and gradual depletion of ones morality was portrayed as well as it could be.

Overall I would only recommend this to those who like to think through a movie. Its not very fast paced and definitely not a popcorn movie. I did enjoy it once i understood that certain scenes in the movie could actually be a reality in the situation.

There was at least 15 people who walked out of the theater fyi.

This was a really great book, so I am interested to see the film. There is also a sequel to Blindness, called Seeing, FYI:

I think I'll try to catch this on Friday. The only thing is I don't know if my wife will be able to handle it. She's still made at me for getting her to watch Oldboy and Ichi the Killer.
