Default Blindness Review

Just caught Blindness and this is a brilliant film. I can see why the writer of the original work it is based off of won the Nobel Prize. The film is thought provoking and very dark. Everything everyone goes through and how everything breaks down...It's disturbing.

I can understand how critics would not liek the film. There are soem horrifying images you would not want to see. But you should see them. At least once.

Definate recommendation from me. I know this will be snubbed by all awards but you should not snub this movie.

Thanks for the review. I’ve been wanting to see this…it is totally flying under the radar, I think I’ve only seen one trailer for it. I read the book, and it was amazing. There is also a sequel called Seeing that I haven’t read yet.
Is this movie still in theaters, or? I’ll probably wait for BD but good to know that it is a good movie.

I know a few Academy members and they recommended it to me.

When you watch it you see why the novelist was hesitant to sellt he rights for a film.

[Show spoiler]The King of Ward 3 is there along with his requests. The way that the Asylum is described is done in pretty good detail on screen.
You will see some very disturbing images in this film.

There is no doubt Saramago is brilliant--I just wondered how successfully the story could be translated for the screen. Good to hear positive reviews.

Thread revival!

I just caught this on HD cable (Starz) and agree with your overall review. The movie really shows the breakdown of the human spirit when pushed to a limit. A visually striking movie which has scenes that will stick with you.

For those looking for an epic apocalyptic movie, look elsewhere, this is a character study of a group of people that when something extraordinary happens, how they breakdown and pull together. It really shows how there would be 2 groups of people when society breaks down.

I am soooo tempted to buy the Japanese BD of this. But it's soooo expensive. Stupid Miramax, they should have released it here and/or Canada.

I think the movie is good, but not sure if I'd pay big bucks to import it. There should be a blu-ray coming sometime, but who knows when. I take it by the responses, not many people have seen the movie?

[Show spoiler] do you think there will be a part 2? I think their biggest problems are just beginning, with the world in chaos, and everyones sight returning, it'll be a mad max scenario

[Show spoiler]There is a sequel book called Sight that came out after. The problem though is that no one would finance a sequel because of the failure that the first film was. Julianne Moore's best performance for me. The girl from I Am Legend was amazing too.

[Show spoiler] cool, maybe I should pickup the books then. I'd like to see how the story plays out. Yep, I agree. I had to look her up, Alice Braga, she played a great part. What I don't get as well, when she slept with the doctor, you'd think Moore would get more upset than she did. Maybe she understood b/c they had something in common? and it wasn't about love?

[Show spoiler]I think she understood that as bad as everyone was feeling and how helpless everyone was it was an outlet that was needed on both their parts.

Although I feel the breakdown of society mentioned is likely quite accurate, and the movie was disturbing, there's 1 massive flaw with the main character in the movie.

[Show spoiler]Of the people I know who've seen the movie, especially women, I can't find anyone that in those exact cicurmstances (being able to see, and no one else knowing about it), would allow themselves and a group of women to be surved up as a dish first, and then, after being raped and degraded, go back and do what should of been done in the first place.

I just can't see it happening, and for me, that ruined the movie.

[Show spoiler] I am thinking it was all fear. Sure she should have killed them before being humiliated the first time. Maybe it was fear. Moore didn't play a badass, just an average house wife who cooked for her husband. Not much is known about her, either that, or I missed her back story. Truth is, I think she was just scared to do anything.

Then after it all happened, she knew she had to do something or face the consequences of this repeating all over again forever. I actually think the lady who lit everything on fire had more moxie.

[Show spoiler]From a mans perspective, If I was a women, I would never of let that happen. My wife is as docile as they come. She laughed and said there was no way in hell any women could allow that, especially since she allowed the others to be raped as well.

[Show spoiler] Personally, I'm with you there, no way in hell would that happen. From her character....maybe she was just afraid, not sure why. But I'm with you there, on a personal level I'd be spouting off "Tonight we dine in HELL!"

I got the film on DVD from the local library, I thought it was so-so. Yusuke Iseya was the only thing I liked since he played a badass in both Casshern and Sukiyaki Western Django. I like how it showed
[Show spoiler]the first blind man losing his sight and then having him get it back at the end
. More or less, you could say it was about the first incident.

That sounds like a nightmare on its own.
