um, these were never IN print, to my knowledge

if it makes you feel any better, one of the insiders over in that forum said that a new HD transfer of Apocalypse Now was made for an upcoming blu-ray release.

First off, there are literally hundreds of thousands of copies for those movies floating around on DVD. Taking them out of print is not that big of a deal. Likely it means that Blu-rays for them are on the plate in the next eighteen to twenty-four months. Studios will often take classics out of print leading up to a new special edition.

I have heard that Paramount does not feel that catalog titles sell enough these days to keep them on the market for DVD. In addition they have scaled back plans to release them on Blu ray, and have no plans to release most of the classic titles on the format. It would explain the recent waves of titles licensed out to Lionsgate. Not that we may never see anything from Paramount on Blu ray, but as I understand they are not making catalog titles priority. My guess is that Criterion could end up nabbing some for future DVD and first time Blu ray, and Lionsgate will continue.

Other than Warner, it seems like all the studios have been holding back on the catalog titles because sales are down on them. My guess is that the public is tired of rebuying the same film over again. The prices are way too high. At $20 - $40 depending on the title it gets expensive to re-collect unless you search the $10. Walmart, Fry's and Best Buy sales. The studios need to sell them at the $10. - $15. range and no higher unless it is an elaborate Special Edition.

For DVD; there is a small indie company called Olive Entertainment who is about to release a bunch of vintage Paramount films never released before.

I understand that Lionsgate has the DVD / Blu ray rights now to certain Coppola Zoetrope films including Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, The Virgin Suicides.

Criterion has already released Paramount's Days of Heaven on Blu ray. So anything is possible. Personally I am hoping Criterion picks up Nashville, Hud, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek and Seconds for Blu ray release.

To be honest I can't see Paramount licensing any of their more popular films to anyone.

However, I can see the more obscure catalogue titles being licensed out, which would be equally as good.

Blu-ray titles are constantly being pulled, or discontinued. It usually happens when the studio has opted to re-release that title, possibly at a lower SRP. This has been happening a lot lately. The re-releases on the X-Men movies, Mission Impossible movies and quite a few other titles.

They're generally only out of print for a short while, about 3-4 months before they're placed back on the schedule as a re-release.

They licensed Benjamin Button to Criterion, and that was a popular new title.

I'd love to see Rosemary's Baby on Blu-Ray!! Fantastic horror flick that I've seen numerous times and never gets old. Hopefully it hits Blu sooner rather than later, I'll be first in line to pick this one up.

Paramount sucks. They have a great back catalog of horror movies that they won't put out. Biggest being the remaining Friday the 13th. Epic fail Paramount. Epic fail

It really is an epic fail. They could be getting loads of cash if they just released every single one of them and then released a box set containing all of them.
Even people who don't like horror today will most likely pick the up the F13 series just because it's CLASSIC horror...

Ridiculous and pathetic, if you ask me...

Don't know what's going on at Paramount to make them not put these out...

I don't even care if they release them in a box set they'd f**k it up anyway. Just release the 4-8.
It's like since the sequel to the remake went away they're like nobody going to want the rest of the other so f**k them.

I would get them individually anyways, box sets sometimes attract more people though.

I'm sure if any other company had the rights to these flicks, they would of released all of them with the remake, it only makes sense to of done that. Either way, they're classics, just release them all together NOW and advertise for them. People will buy them.

I don't know why Paramount is so blind.
