original soundtrack or remixed soundtrack?!?! - Blu-ray Forum

This is my 1st post.

So I was wondering if your favorite older movie comes out on blu-ray and it has the original mono or stereo soundtrack and a new fancy DTS/Dolby 22.15 SUPER DUPER HD REMIX which track do you listen to?

I for one go to the original track.

I also prefer the original mix... on some occasions the upmix is passable, but the film purist in me considers remixing the soundtrack similar to film colorization, or pan & scan instead of OAR.

Typically it depends on the age of the movie and how reviewers have treated the new mix. Not all new mixes are created equal and some sound very different than what is on screen.

I always listen to the newest mix. As a person who has done many re-mixes in my career, most of us who do this try and stick as closely as possible to the original intent, and mix to enhance the story, not distract from it. I have found that a lot of directors wanted stereo or multichannel mixes of their movies, but money or technology got in the way of the vision. So do not get stuck with the idea the all older mixes are the directors original intent. Most of the time that is not the case at all.

While I might give a listen to the original mono out of curiosity, I much prefer the newer mixes. I have to personally think that the director would've done it that way if the technology had been in place at the time.

I usually listen to the new mixes first and then might check out the original tracks upon second or third viewing.

I prefer that the original mix is included, regardless of whether it is mono or dolby pro logic. This goes especially for movies I've seen many times like Superman: The Movie (Blu-ray and DVD), or Star Trek: The Motion Picture (DVD). Both of these movies were sonically butchered for the sake of 5.1 surround, complete with missing dialogue and subdued music.
