This is a new campaign by GLSEN to break the use of "That's so gay." or "That's gay." among teens and adults.
Quote:
It's main target is for people who think that the phrases are innocuous when they are not. The homophobes will require a separate campaign altogether. The campaign is supported by the Ad Council and MTV. Watch the videos at thinkb4youspeak.com. Two of the ads feature Hillary Duff and Wanda Sykes. They are funny, educational and to the point. What's surprising so far is that the adult in the videos are not guys. Wonder why is that? fuad |

Man I hate that word. What pisses me off even more is when I hear these little teenagers using the word. It makes me want to give them a beating (and I'm not even black). I bet you if they were to say it around a black person and they catch a beatdown because of it, they wouldn't be saying it anymore. What I find ironic that the "brothers" are the only ones that use derogatory word like it's clean word like "how are you"? you never hear white people say "what's up cracker" "nothing much honkey" or hispanics say "sup spick?" "just chilling wetback". It's

i don't get it either. it's like those people who get angry at the use of the word spaz. like when one says stop spazzing out. it's just a phrase. it's not the end of the world. we tend to put too much emphasis on what other people say these days.

Saying "That's so gay" should be outlawed due to it's inherant negativity? What a queer thing to be concerned with. (it's a funny pun if you actually know the true definition of the words...but the pun is no longer funny now that it has to be explained)
Seriously, I take offense that a person who doesn't condone, accept, or agree with the homosexual (LGBT) lifestyle is immediately labelled a homophobe. If there's one thing I learned in Tolerance classes in school, is that you must tolerate my beliefs and opinions whether you like or agree with them or not. Which means you should stop telling me how I should feel or think and empathize with my opinions even if they are contrary to yours. At least, that's what's required of ME if I don't agree with your (or anyone else's) particular lifestyle, so I assume those espousing the idea of tolerance would be willing to abide by the same requirement they wish others to live by. Kind of defeats their whole premise if they refuse, eh? camper |

That is to say, cut down on the kiddie South-Park use of "That's so gay" as just a plain old synonym for "bad" or "lame"--
When it could be more properly used to disparage things that really ARE So Annoyingly Gay for traditionally specific reasons, like "Moulin Rouge", "X-Men 2", "Hairspray", theatrical sing-along revivals, or the New Doctor Who series... Words only lose their power when they become generic, after all...Literacy teaches us to keep and employ the right word for the right definition. ![]() Last edited by EricJ; 10-10-2008 at 08:07 PM. |

Sounds cool! People who use phrases like that are clueless and ignorant and I usually don't assign them any level of respect.
BTW: here's a great video that speaks on that topic a bit. It's Jay Smooth (Illdoc) and it's him talking about the hip hop slang "No Homo" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJnlPP7jm5s |

Marriage, benefits, civil unions, whatever. I've talked with people who are so vehement about banning gay marriages and denying equal rights to those who are gay because they're afraid it's some dangerous thing that's gonna somehow ...I don't know, turn everyone gay or something. They don't like the direction they see the country going in it's "acceptance" of homosexuality, and they fear, yes FEAR the change and how it's going to impact their lives. So they are rightfully described (at least by myself) as homophobes. Now if someone just doesn't like gay people because they're faith disagrees with it, hey....I'm not gonna knock that. Everyone has a right to believe what they want. As for the original topic and the "that's so gay" I get the point and I agree. It's taking a group of people's lifestyle and equating that with "stupid" or "dumb" or "lame" or whatever. I read somewhere, and I can't remember where it's sourced from but it's essentially saying that we as humans know two things: Fear and Understanding. And what we don't understand, we fear. A lot of people just don't "understand" homosexuality, or other cultures, or other races or whatever, and so they fear them. They fear the unknown. And because they're too....whatever, to get out and actually LEARN about other cultures, races, people's sexual preference, whatever, it's much easier for them to distrust it and discriminate against. Kinda like old people who are so deathly afraid of the internet and computers because they just don't understand it and don't know what it's about. Just my thoughts. |
