Default TrueHD Audio Question

With quite a few Blu-ray DVD's coming with TrueHD audio now I have a question. I have a PS3 as my Blu-ray player I know where to go on my PS3 under BD audio settings so, do I hit on or off in order to get the TrueHD audio when I watch movies? It gives me Automatic, on, or off as my options.

Thanks in advance!

when you're watching a movie, press select and it'll tell you what audio codec you're listening to.

I think you're looking at the Dynamic Range Control, which is the wrong setting. If you have your PS3 hooked up via HDMI to your reciever, when playing a Dolby TrueHD track, simply change the audio output from Bitstream to Linear PCM.

DRC is turned to OFF
Audio is set to PCM
On some movies Truhd has to be selected.

I think he was asking how to get it to play the TrueHD track, not how to check which track he's playing.

In certain titles you go to the Blu-Ray audio menu, not the PS3 menu, to enable the HD audio track.

when watching a movie hit triangle on your controller..then go all the way over to the right and hit display once then go back to the left and hit audio until the display at the top says truehd

Ok while on the same topic I too have a question about Dolby TrueHd. I am in the market in purchasing a new home theatre unit and have noticed that none of them mention Dolby TRuHD on there as a feature whether it be Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, etc. but just simply Dolby Digital, Pro Logic thats all I see. My question is, is there no such thing as TruHD for home theatres yet or does it simply not matter to the unit itself? Thanks guys!

Unit meaning... reciever? player? Home theater in a box?

Dolby TrueHD is a sound format for home theaters featured on HD DVD and Blu-Ray. I guess I don't understand your question.

you must be looking at the lower end models ....try an onkyo 605 or 805 theyre probably cheaper
edit: a home theater thing youre looking at is probablyl just a dvd player with some speakers...you must look at an a/v receiver

Yes I mean the receiver itself. For Example I looked at a couple of different home theatre units on Bestbuy.com and all of them including their Magnolia brands which cost over $1000 do not mention Dolby TrueHD as a decoder feature which makes me believe that the receiver cannot decode Dolby TrueHD. Like I said, all I see listed is Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro LogicII and that's pretty much it. So I am just wanting to confirm that since I am looking to purchase a new home theatre unit, should I be paying attention to one that has Dolby True HD as a feature in order to experience the TrueHD sound from a Blu-Ray movie with atht feature? Hope that helps with my question. Thanks again.

Just make sure your player can bitstream the new audio codecs. Otherwise having the reciever being able to decode the audio isn't that helpful unless you plan on upgrading your player at some point as well (like me).

What do you mean by "bitstream?" Should I look for that term as part of the feature? Also, what set of speakers would you guys recommend buying? Thanks.

What kind of budget are we talking for receiver/speakers?

"Bitstream" is when the player effectively sucks the bits stored on the Blu-ray disc and sends them over the HDMI cable to the receiver. The receiver then decodes the bits and turns them into sound.

If you want an easy way to check whether or not a player bitstreams TrueHD or DTS-MA, check it out here: https://www.blu-ray.com/players/
