Default DVD Upscaling Definitely Coming for PS/3

Harrison: We Should Be Sharing Our Road Map

Quote:
"There is a cultural thing about our approach in Japan that has to change. Our approach in Japan is, 'Once it's perfect, we'll share it with everybody else.' Whereas I think in order to engender trust in our users, we have to share some things that might be not quite perfect, but are ready to give you an indication of what's coming," Harrison explained. "So we could say, 'You know, we're not sure when it's coming, but we're going to have DVD upscaling on Playstation 3.'
This means they are working HARD on it, and the Sony culture has kept this under wraps.

Great to have confirmation but obviously not making it on the upcoming fw at European launch.

Patience is a virtue, right?

Althought it's nice to see something a little more concrete even though we knew it would happen, we still aren't any closer to an actual date.

Have you guys ever seen a DVD upconverter? Its really nothing to jump hoops over for. I own a Samsung DVD-HD960 upconverter. you can switch to each res (480p,720p,1080i,1080p) Can't really tell the difference between them.
Let me know if you think differently, maybe something is wrong with mine.

It's not a big deal but still should be an included feature.

I agree with Amon, once it comes on the PS3 I can trash my Sony upscale DVD player! One less component in the system.

Upscaling low-res video...like upsampling low-res audio. Gee great. No matter how much we polish a turd it will still be a turd.

I believe holding back upscaling in general has been intentional. It is a way to up the quality by getting game developers to push for real 1080p level detail. Just letting an upscaler do everything caters to the lowest common denominator of 480 and 720 x-platform companies like EA that spit out the bare minimum crap. Ironically, I believe it is actually about creating a better experience in the long run...so yes patience is a virtue.

That's my theory.

When you use the fill screen function to stretch your anamorphic widescreen videos to your 16:9 TV. Its Upsampling. The quality of the upsampling is based on the chip you got on your TV. Using a player to upsample your videos, may sometimes look better than your TV. This is because the deinterlacing filters, and deblocking filters are better than your TV has.

I had used a Toshiba Upsampling DVD player before PS3. Upsampling to 720p with the Toshiba player looked better than an el-cheapo progressive scan DVD player (Desay brand) that I used prior to both Toshiba and PS3. However PS3's DVD playback can match that of the Toshiba player if I max out the block noise filter in the DNR settings in PS3. My TV does a great job upsampling the video, but has not block filtering.

Im actualy glad it does not have block filtering, because it would hinder Blu-ray playback.

BTW: DNR is only for DVD playback, it will not effect Blu-ray.

That's funny....I remember not too long ago how people used to praise DVD over the horrendous picture on VHS..........now DVD is a "turd".....

We are not talking about upscaling of games, just DVD's as I understand it.

As somebody mentioned before it is really a very big difference between a good scaler with good deintelacer and noice reduction and a mediocre one.

I have a Sony VW50 1080p SXRD projector and a Denon 2930 1080p DVD player and the picture is extremely good for DVD.
It is actually better on a god DVD than a bad Blu-ray.

The PS3 has the possibilities of using several filters and other enhancements on the picture, so the potential is great.

Personally I would never use a PS3 as my main DVD player because the user interface ( lack of display ) and the fact that it is very noisy.

Yes but if Sony exposes the full scaler capabilities for DVD then it impacts gaming as well. They are joined at the hip. Since most people would be purchasing the PS3 for games I think they have been cautious in this regard to not undermine the HD gaming side because of a secondary purpose. Was just explaining that it's not necessarily related to the "PS3 can't and won't be able to do that" message being spread. Since people have multiple factors in play making decisions - and this is one of them - other perspectives are useful.

That's all.

I would much rather have confirmation that they are absolutley doing hdmi 1.3so the tons of recievers already out there will get the hi-def audio without having to buy the latest one off the shelf.

Same here, except for the one time I forgot to open my cabinet doors where I keep my unit. I opened the doors and it was super loud. So if your unit is loud then its not cooling properly.

Like some other folks here, I'm starting to wonder if I care. I've never read anything to lead me to believe that a DVD will look that much better with upconversion.
