Question DVD Upscaling

Is there a specific setting or menu for upscaling regular DVDs to 1080i on the PS3?

Question Duh, Duh, Duh...

This still bugs me and I can't find a thread with a good answer.

What would my PS3 be doing when it upscales a DVD over HDMI to a 1080p TV?

Is it just 'blowing up' the picture - or is there actual extra information there that my DVD player never would have been able to reveal?

Discuss... Thanks.

ok, I could be totally wrong here 'cause I have no tech background but have you noticed when watching a vid on your computer that when you go fullscreen the PQ doesn't look as defined as when the vid is regular size or in a smaller window? Well I have noticed that and it seams when I use the double scale on my ps3 it makes the movie image a bit smaller on my t.v. screen so I think that's how it makes it clearer.

Hope that helps

And I forgot to address your quest in my post so when you're watching a blu go to options on the ps3 remote and highlight the icon that says A/V settings and you'll find it there

There is a setting in the PS3 menu.. Im not at home right now or Id put the path to it.. But its not that difficult to find and it gives you 4 options I believe. I played around with all of them while watching Transformers.. I ended up on the "Normal" setting.. These however are all preference so throw in something visually worth playing around with and go through them to find the one you like..

.. Id associate it with the old argument of 780p vs 1080i....

Isn't it automatic? Although I do believe there is an option in the menu under settings.

Normal upscales it correctly for each title, whether it's widescreen, 4.3, whatever.

But what do each of the settings do? Normal? Full? Double? I can't find this in the manual

It all depends on the DVD with the PS3. Some are so good that they really live up to the almost as good as HD hype and some are unwatchble. No upscaler will make them all look good, none that I have seen so far.

Normal:
Scales the picture to fit the screen without changing the aspect ratio of the original. If original is 720x480 after scaling it would be 1920x1080 while preserving the original aspect of the image. If the original is 4x3 content, after scaling black columns will appear on left are right of the image. If the original content is anamorphically stretched 16x9, this would fit in to the 1920x1080 space and fill 16x9 screen. If the original is 2.35:1 scope movie, black bars (on top and bottom) would appear on a 16x9 display. But these bars would be smaller than the bars that will appear on a 4x3 screen. A mathematical algorithm would be used for pixel mapping and the accuracy of the algorithm would reflect the quality of upscaled image.

This is my preferred method of scaling.

Double:
Doubles the picture while keeping the original aspect ratio but not necessarily fit the image to the display, For example, if the original resolution is 720x480, after doubling it will be 1440x960. This will not fill 1920x1080 HD screen and I expect boxing would occur on all four sides of the image. This method should deliver a better quality image in comparison to the Normal mode.

Full:
Stretches the original image to fill 16x9 screen. If original material is 4x3, the image would be deformed.

You should go on DOOM9 Forums
Upscaling, the good kind does all kinds of things, the bad kind does only stretching to the TV.

Let's put this into laymans terms. Do you know what anti aliasing is?
Upscaling is like anti aliasing, but instead of dealing with edge detail it deals more so on overall details for the entire frame.

Upscaling: (The good kind)
Say for instance the pixel content can produce a circle in the background with a limited amount of pixels. The background image appears to be a STOP SIGN,..however in reality it should be a simple red circle.
Upscaling besides stretching the image to fit the pixel count would also INTERPOLATE pixels and fill in missing areas. The better the scaler the less blur would occur to create the missing pixels. Bilinear for instance would only use nearest neighbor to figure out missing pixel interpolation. So THUS you do have "increased detail" But not all upscalers have increased sharpness, only the "good kind"

This HQV video is the best example I could think of.

If you want to know, the PS3 has one of the best upscalers in the world. I have placed it back to back using Avisynth (limitedsharpenfaster), HQV, Powerdvd and many more processors and then compared it to the link on the following page. The image quality is best using Ps3.

Thanks for this. My experience regarding PS3s ability to upscale is somewhat different.

Firstly I should say that PS3 is the best blu-ray player that I have seen for 1080p material. As I have noted previously, it delivers an awesome picture with finest clarity, smoothness and rich colours even on a large screen, if you have a good blu-ray transfer (one example: Curse of the black pearl). The best picture I have even seen in a home configuration.

However, the best upconverter I have for DVDs is the PC. Based on what I have seen, PS3 cannot beat my PC for DVDs. I expect, upscaling algorithm of PS3 could be improved. We may see better upscaling with new firmware upgrades.

Are you using the same display to watch your PC-upscaled DVD's?
