Default surrounds

i know the degree that the surround for a 5.1 setup are supposed to be placed in but looking at so many setups im am confused at the best possible direction to face them. should they being faced towards the front, slightly toed in towards the seating position, or facing directly at the seating position.

for my setup in particular i have my couch against the back wall (more bass ). so the speakers are above ear level at the sides of the couch, not sure what way they are supposed to face or what way would maximize their effect and/or my soundstage.

Looking at your setup, you should put those surrounds up a few feet and mount them above your head. Since they're bipoles/dipoles, you don't need them directly radiating at you. Also... get that center off the floor and move your fronts out a few feet and toe them in!

On a separate note- why are all your pictures mirrored?

LOL yeah i should have commented those pictures are very out of date, they were taken in the first few days of having my setup, after a few months of speaker positions and such, looks much different now, anyways the mounting thing is why i figured they should face directly forward, above ear level and just behind the couch. but all the website faqs i find list the positioning in the 90 degree off of center area but don't list how to face them, and earlier i saw a pic where the guy had his surrounds facing inward directly at each other and the couch.

i took those pics with my macbook, so they are mirrored, don't know if there is a way to change that or not.

edit: wow those pics are real old, i am actually using my old jbl speakers as stands for my surrounds, they are pretty tall, my fronts are spread out much farther and yes toed in lol, which is actually my main reason for wondering if surrounds should be toed in and i am sad to admit though my center is still on the floor. im actually going this payday to buy a solid block of wood to place behind the center and raise my tv enough that the center doesn't obstruct the view, cause it is a big one.

I think how you have your surrounds is fine then. The point is to create a diffuse surround field with those and I think you've done that.
