Default Royal Digital Media develops new optical media format that exceeds BD capacity

Okay so there have been other companies that tried to compete with Blu Ray before.

DVD: Though Cheaper, old news. Not an issue
HD DVD: Had its 15 minutes of fame, but that show has been canceled.
S.U.C: Well sure if you want to wait 3 hours to watch a movie... I don't think so. Even then, it doesn't match BR quality.

But now I here about Royal Digital Media and their 100 GB disc with much better encryption...

Will this be the one that gives Blu Ray a run for its money. My guess... Probably not. The studios have already gone through the whole "transition to Blu Ray" process. Blu Ray is good enough for what they need. Not sure why they would go through the expense of producing movies on a new format. Unless the encryption issue is enough to tempt them. I guess we'll see???

I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

Here is a link to the info:
http://www.prweb.com/releases/DreamS...web1540224.htm

I would love to know if any insiders have heard anythign about this new format, and if so, does it really do what it claims???

Wasn't there a 100gb blu-ray possible? All that was needed to make that work was a firmware update? Other than the encryption (which will be hacked eventually) there is no point to this. Then there is the issue of studio support...good luck getting that now after the hddvd/blu-ray battle. I'm sure major studios want nothing to do with another format battle.

If you ask me this is all specualtion and hear-say that we shouldn't worry about. This sounds like nothing more than vaporware, and was probably written by an angry hd-dvd owner. Half of their statements are all FUD anyway.

The major studios and consumer electronics manufacturers are not going to leap on another technology bandwagon so soon after the Blu-ray/HD DVD war.

Even if the technology is viable, it's dead in the water.

I'm getting bored with all these companies just trying to compete their format to have HD domance since Toshy surendered last Feburary. All I hear nowadays is "blah, blah, blah, BD will be dead in a year, HD downloads will be on top". It's just sensless for studios to go to another format, especially with the budget crisis. It's just uneconomical to go for another physical format. One's enough.

Yes! It will happen.

My intellectual reasoning is finely tuned and my thought process is:

I just spent a damn fortune on Blu-ray. Therefore, the change over will happen and soon.

Lol. Quickly browsed over the article.

1 - Is that much encryption really needed for a MOVIE??

2 - It will be cracked in a few months time. They always are.

Not going to happen. First off, it would be easier to upgrade Blu-ray, and most of the existing players, to support 100, even 500 GB discs. Really. I am not kidding. They recently said they are working on a 500 GB disc, and the 100GB have been in development far longer.
But besides that, doubling the size is not anywhere NEAR enough for any further expansion. Right now, Blu-ray supports everything we need. Everyone supports it, it has the best picture and sound, there are almost no TVs that use higher resolution (they are out there but not main stream), and the quality is superb. Adding more space now is a waste.
Maybe if future technologies come into play that could do things Blu-ray can not, like 4k or even 8k resolutions, then maybe more capacity would be needed, but it would need to be MUCH more than 100GB! Try 1TB, or more.
Holographic discs are in development that can store (theoretically) up to 3TB of data. another 100GB format is really a joke right now.
Blu-ray is great cause it is affordable, wide-spread, and matches perfectly the potential of current Home Theater technology, INCLUDING 3D! Yes, Blu-ray can support 3D so even THAT would not be enough to merit an upgrade.

There have been so many formats vying for a place in the world, and only a few succeed. Right now, working on a format to replace Blu-ray is a waste of time, money, resources, and energy.

OK then. In a few months I can buy a player at a reasonable price.

When I take it home, what will I do with it?

I'll have to update my NETFLIX Queue for RDM discs.

Update:
After reading the article, this whole this is about encryption!?!? WHO GIVES A ROYAL ****!?
They have already greatly exaggerated the massive losses they claim Sony has had from piracy on Blu-ray. The only real losses they and all movie picture companies have are from DVD piracy, not Blu-ray.
No one would want or use a technology for commercial movies that encrypts things like this. Studios might like the idea, but are already married in with Blu-ray, and have no reason to move their resources elsewhere. THAT would be a major loss.

All very good points, but the one above is probably the best of all.

My thoughts were that they are promising this by 1Q 2009, which seems odd.

First: It would already have to be pretty far along in development for them to quote a release to store date of 1Q 2009. So this would make it seem like this is real.

Second: However, if this were real, I would think there would be more than one articale on it to be found on the web.

Like I said... I guess we'll see.

why so greedy, even a quarter would make you rich enough to date a supermodel

On the other hand I was wondering what was going to be the BD killer for this hour.

The article (and their website) are 99.9% about high encryption and a tiny mention that it allows 100GB discs and uses a red laser.

Who (apart from studios) cares about the encryption. There's no mention of the technology like maximum bitrates for video, frame rates (can it decode 1080p video at more than one frame rate?), can it do 3d like for 100hz/120hz LCD HDTVs (not using anaglyph 3d glasses)? Can it decode 25p and 1080i50 & 1080p50/60? And 1080p is the max, even with higher res displays being demonstrated? Still 4:2:0 not 4:4:4? What about Deep colour, 10-12 bit colour?

They've really not said anything about what their system can do that other systems aren't capable of, and I doubt it will succeed on better quality encryption alone - and if the entire video is encrypted with much higher bitrate encryption, isn't that going to require extra disc space, bitrate and processing resources anyway - just for encryption (ie. won't 2,048-bit instead of 128 bit need lots more disc space/bitrate/processing resources, and maybe more power/cost to run?)?

How reliable & easy to make will the 100GB discs be - and is this the maximum or what every movie will be released on - as Blu-ray can potentially use discs with a few hundred GB in the lab but no films/TV shows have ever been released on them - they're all released on 25GB & 50GB discs.
