Anyone know the reason behind changing the name from live free or die hard to die hard 4.0 in the uk.I cant see why that original title wouldnt of been ok here.We believe in living free too

It's a money thing. I'll bet someone executives thought some people didn't live free or die hard is a Die Hard movie.

Add Die Hard 4 and that will generate more interest...ergo more sales.

we believe in living free to LMAO, nice OP.

thought this was weird as well! i do know there seems to be alot of anti american sentiment world wide recently, so the marketing was probably changed to avoid any damage to sales, seems big corporations give people everywhere less credit then they deserve.

edit: also being a fan of everything japanese lol i notice alot of name changes that are far from being just chocked up to translation difficulty, and they also use test groups that could have shown 4.0 did better outside of america, i remember crash bandicoot lost his individual teeth lines or something with the mouth when he made the transition to japan, it tested better among focus groups

Maybe because of the long separation between the last Die Hard and the new one, they just wanted it to live on its own.

with the global economy in crisis, they were trying to shorten the name to save ink, thus saving money.....................................

Noble idea i thought

Maybe they realized Die Hard 4.0 is a better title. If not for 9/11, the title Live Free or Die Hard would not exist. Since other countries don't have as direct a connection to this tragic event, the name itself loses it lure. IMHO.

Possibly because Live Free Die Hard is to American. So Die Hard 4 made more sense.

i hate the whole name change thing its silly you should only have one title for a film .Thats why men in suits sit round a desk for hours deciding what to call it.You cant say well thats decided then we'll name it live free or die hard oh and we'll call it die hard 4.0 too and im liking die hard 4.0 hard and free ,they havent decided anything.I also think it loses some identity kinda like me being called stuart one week and steven the next

So what's the origin of the phrase "live free or die hard"? I had no idea it was American and I don't really know what it means. The closest thing I can think of is "liberty or death"....

"Live Free Or Die" is the official motto of New Hampshire, a US state. Adding "Hard" to the end of it makes a semi-clever joke.

Neo is right about it being the motto of New Hampshire. It comes from an American Revolutionary war veteran of new Hampshire reflecting on the war. Whoever said it had something to do with 9/11.... it does not come from there.

I have no idea why they changed it, Die Hard 4.0 sounds more geeky to me than anything else. It's like saying you're going to eat your Oreo's 2.0

Well the movie is about abusing technology and computer-controlled systems, so the 4.0 was chosen on purpose to tie in with that. It was supposed to be geeky, since the enemy of the movie is using computers as a weapon.

I believe that Die Hard 4.0 was the original title, and it was changed to Live Free Or Die Hard in just the US because it's a cute pun based off a famous US quote, and it also ties in with all the patriotism running rampant.

Die Hard 4.0 was supposed to be the title originally for obvious reasons if you've seen the film, and then it was changed to Live Free or Die Hard. Now it apparently has gone back to Die Hard 4.0 for certain countries. Seems like an odd thing to complain about...

Just what does one have to do with the other?

What, exactly, does that statement mean?
