Okay I'm not sure if this topic has ever been brought up but I was wondering if someone could explain to me how/why I am watching "Jaws" in HD (and countless other films) and I still can't buy them in the stores? There is probably a simple answer but I just don't get it. "Jaws" looks pretty darn good on HBO HD (TV says it's in 1080i) Whats the deal here?

Yeah, I get that. But It's not just "Jaws" I'm talking about, all the HD films on TV. I don't know, it just annoys me a bit that it's that easy for them to air it on TV but you can't buy it. Thanks for your reply. (Shrugs)

There is quite a few movies available to be watch on HDTV but not yet ready for BD. I am not sure what the reasons for all of them would be. A lot of it could be that there is more work to be done on them before transfering them on BD??

The thing is that back in the day, they'd do a HD scan for a DVD release. These HD scans have found their way into broadcast on HD channels.
That's why they show in HD on TV. They pulled HD transfers last time they did work with the film, so a digital HD master is available, but in many cases, they're simply not ready to release it on Blu-ray (or they believe there isn't a market for it). In the case of something like Jaws, they may well be waiting to do a full-on remaster for it. It's a similar case with TV shows aired in HD that don't get released. Just because there exists a digital HD version of a thing doesn't mean that thing is going to be instantly put out on Blu-ray. |

I beleive it is just upscaled to 1080i. It's like TNT which makes me sick half the time when they claim they are broadcasting a movie in HD and it's all stretched out. I F****** hate that. Looks horrible.

Not necessarily upscaled. TV stations can get HD Television masters(usually previous DVD masters at 1080i(p)) specifically for presenting these films on television. They may be using the original broadcast master(4:3) on their hd channel, but it should be clear if your television is stretching that material.

All cable stations are compressed significantly because they need to fit multiple channel feeds over the coaxial cable. Most upscaled DVDs would significantly improve on TNT HD broadcasts, let alone their blu counterparts.

I have Directv HD and it looks the same, is it just a general rule to compress the broadcast?
