I am having a double feature with the 2 films tomorrow evening. Should be fun, and will bring back memories of when I was a teen and actually saw them as a DF in a movie theatre. I'm collecting all the Clint Films on Blu Ray. Hope there are more to come! |

I watched my Warner Bros. Blu-ray of The Gauntlet last night, and loved it.
I used to see The Gauntlet on television a lot during my childhood, and I always had to stop what I was doing and stay riveted to the screen. In retrospect, I'm amazed that they were able to fit all of the adult conversation and profanity into an edited-for-television form that was even remotely cohesive, but it all worked somehow. This movie hits the ground running, and it never lets up. It's one of the more "matinee-esque" Clint Eastwood films because of the fast pacing, and it reminds me more of something like Raiders of the Lost Ark because of the way that it flows from one action moment to another. Eastwood and Sondra Locke were in top form working together in this one, and it shows. I like how the film reveals more about the characters in gradual increments so that the viewer is engaged and invested in them the entire time. The picture quality of this Blu-ray looks great to me. I personally believe that the 1970s Clint Eastwood films receive a bad rap for their transfers, and I've always been impressed at how much better they all look than their DVD incarnations. None of them are necessarily demo quality by today's standards, but they reflect the endearing grit of Eastwood's productions quite well. EDIT: My Blu-ray is the 2010 reissue of The Gauntlet, but it's likely the same transfer across the board. |

Random question. What are those things called that Eastwood had hanging around his neck at the beginning of the movie? I think his was a scorpion. Never actually seen one of those other than on TV/movies.
