Default BD/DVD combo disc

Are there any plans for BD/DVD combo disc? I personally would like this feature because I can use the BD in my main home theatre setup and use the DVD in my son's room and car dvd player.

Unless BD players become cheap enough for me to buy a player for every room in my house and for our car, I think this would be a great idea.

According to paidgeek, the demand is too weak for publishers to consider this option.

It's kind of pointless, IMO. Just like HD-DVD is pointless in general.

Exactly.

If I want SD, I'll buy it. Don't force it on me, especially if means extra cost and/or ANY kind of quality compromise on the main product.

Combos suck!

I don't like that idea. Just another way to make it more pricey.

So am I the only one who would pay a little more to get the option of a second universal format. I would pay maybe an extra $5 to have that luxury.

I was at Fry's and I saw Half Baked on an HD-DVD/DVD combo disc for $25. That is pretty reasonable to me.

Judging by your post history around here and just in that thread alone? You probably are the only one, yes.

Going by what you wrote in that thread, you all probably wouldn't see the differences between either side of the combo discs anyways.

Why not save the money and just stick to regular DVD's at that rate?

I agree. I HATE being force fed combo discs. I think Universal doing combos is more about convenience for them than anything. Their effort shows in their menu designs. It's easier to slap the DVD on the back than reintegrating extras along with the HD presentation. Most of the time, such combos lose the interactivity promoted and many HD combos have compromised performance as well, by limiting the HD side of the disc to 15GB. They can do 30GB hybrids now, but they still aren't in all cases. Considering what used and new DVDs are selling for on eBay just a month after release, if you want a DVD copy for trips or another room, it shouldn't be much, if any more expensive to buy another disc. And then, should you one day no longer have the need for a low quality DVD of the same movie, you've got something you can sell.

I think it would a good idea for people like me and for people who don't have or can't afford BD players right now. They could continue to buy movies while building their BD collection until prices come down a little. That would just bring more people to the BD side.

If making BD disc is too pricey or comprimises quality, how bout studios releasing 2 disc sets: 1 BD disc and 1 DVD disc. It hardly cost them any extra to throw in a DVD. Similar to Ice Age on DVD, they included a widescreen version and a full screen version on 2 disc.

Either way, its a win win situation for consumers and BD.

Well, I only own one BD player and I own 4 dvd players, including my car. If i buy a BD disc, I'm limited to where I can watch. In places like my kitchen and car, SD will do fine for me.

Why would any Blu-ray owner want to pay any extra for something they will never use and why would any DVD owner want to pay extra for something they may or may not use in the future? The only "combo" that makes any kind of sense is the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD discs and that helps the company a lot more than the consumer.

Doesn't sound very "reasonable", does it?

Well, my cadillac has a DVD navigation system. It obvious that I can't upgrade that to a BD system and I would never want to either. It would be great for me to buy one disc that works across all my players.

The facts can't be stated much better than this.

I did have a question and that's why I posted it here. If you read back, JTK attack me because of a previous post he didn't agree with.

BD/DVD is a legitimate issue. It's not a far fetched idea since HD-DVD has it.
According to some of the more rational post here, the main factor is price. I can agree with that if the price is too high. But what if the price was only a few dollars extra. I personally would pay an extra $5. For me, the more options the better.

So because YOU want to play both everyone should pay extra? It makes no economical sense except for the 1 in a 1000+ that feel the need to watch movies in their cars.
