Default Onkyo 606 questions?

I currently have a samsung htib system and want to upgrade so that i can get the HD audio tracks when watching bluray through my PS3. I've researched the Onkyo 606 and I believe thats the receiver i wanna go with but i have a few questions.

1. I gotta use the old speakers my HTIB came with until i have the money to upgrade those as well, my question is how do i connect those speakers with the receiver since the Onkyo doesn't have the old style speaker wire connections.

2. The Onkyo doesn't seem to have a connection that i can use with my old subwoofer. My subwoofer isn't powered and it just has the speaker wire coming from the back that connects using the red and black leads. Will my subwoofer even work with the Onkyo?

3. Last question if I can get them all hooked up will the Onkyo reciever break or hurt my old speakers since they are just a HTIB set?

1. Define "old style". If you mean bare wire, the 606 can accept that.
2. You'd have to run the front connection to your sub, and run the fronts from the sub. Set your fronts to "full" in the receiver's menu. Not the best solution but it is a workable one until you get a replacement.
3. What is the old set? Assuming it's not 4 Ohm there shouldn't be an issue.

HTIB speakers only work with the "receiver" that it comes with.

1.You would have to buy new speakers
2. Onkyo 606 is a good receiver
3. Since you are using ps3 as your blu ray player you will use linear.

Good Luck

What is your budget? I will piece something nice together that you can afford

Wrong. I have an Onkyo HTIB and I just keep swapping out the receiver. Depends on your HTiB.

That's some pretty heavy duty misinformation there. Are you a Circuit City sales person?

Yeah i'm sorry i meant bare wire. Also here is the link to my current system.

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/do...nm=HT-Q70T/XAA

aramis109 I don't understand how your saying to connect the subwoofer will it work? It looks like the Onkyo only has a component connection for a subwoofer.

If you look through the manual for my current system it gives some specs for the speakers here they are.

Front/Center/Rear speaker
Impedance 3Ω x 6
Frequency range 145Hz~20KHz
Output sound pressure 84dB/W/M
Rated input 140W
Maximum input 280W

Subwoofer speaker
Impedance 3Ω
Frequency range 35Hz~155Hz
Output sound pressure 82dB/W/M
Rated input 160W
Maximum input 320W

May have to take back what I said earlier.

I can't tell from the manual, but looking at the back of your sub, do you see any connections for left/right? A lot of passive subwoofers have connections on the back to connect the front speakers to.

If they do:

You would connect your subwoofer to the receiver via speaker wire to the "front left" and "front right" inputs. You would then connect the front speakers to the sub via speaker wire to the appropriate front left/front right inputs. The audio for the fronts are sent to the sub, which then grabs just the LFE and passes on everything else to the fronts.

If they don't:

You'll have to get a new sub, but can keep the other speakers until such point you decide to upgrade.

Aramis109 i saw in your first post that you said as long as my old speakers weren't 4ohm there shouldn't be a problem but i think on the spec sheet it lists my speakers as 3Ω x 6 does this mean there 3ohm and that they probably wouldn't work with the Onkyo 606? I don't wanna get the new reciever and then blow up the speakers or damage the reciever right off the bat.

Actually, that's a good catch. Looks like it is 3, which is kind of weird. If that's the case, no I don't think you'll be able to use these with the 606, so in this case CC was right.

Can anyone else with more knowledge step in and confirm or correct what I've said here? I'm not real sure and don't want to steer you wrong.

*Edit* Yeah, that's no good for the 606. Recommends 6-8 I believe. You'll just end up pushing the 606 into protection mode if you listen to it at any volume at all.

if your speakers from your htib, subwoofer included, have bare speaker wire then you will be able to run them from the onkyo 606 temporarily until you can upgrade to a much more desirable setup. if they have color coded plugs on them, like all the samsung htib systems that i PERSONALLY have seen, then you are sorry to say up that famous creek without a perverbial paddle. you could maybe cut and splice the wires, but why waste your time and effort. honestly, i would try and sell the htib to a friend, co workers, family member, or put it up for sale on ebay. you will definately get some takers i promise you that. btw, im a product of that circuit city training and i think i know my stuff pretty well for a 24 yr old college kid. just because we all hang out in a toilet doesnt mean we are all extrement...thats poop for some of the novices out there. lol

You mean "excrement"? lol

Anyway, he can't use those because of the ohm rating. It's just not going to work with that receiver.
