Default The PS2 Is Now Officially An Open Platform !!!

Quote:
The PlayStation 2 is far from dead, and the console is outselling the PS3. With Sony Europe's developer relations manager George Bain announcing that it's no longer necessary for developers to submit upcoming titles to Sony for content approval , don't expect the PS2 to die off anytime soon. The platform is now open, and this action will certain spur on a spate of low-cost titles. Bain cited territories like Russia and India that are now able to "create low-development cost titles and release them in their market”. Dev kits are still an necessity, but there are no longer PS2 licensing fees. "This has never been done before," notes Bain. "This is something we're actively promoting.
i'm still not sure about that because not everybody have a PS2 div kit to put there games out so easy , i think somebody will breakthrough with a game that'll bring the console back to the market sometime and i'm really lookin' forward to it , i know there have been a game made in KSA bout kaaba and the right way to do your prayers there in a form of a learning game , we'll wait and see how this console at it last years is going to rule again

I think the idea is that the PS3 Dev Kit is supposed to be cheap to come by so that small soft companies can easily get their hands on that one and develop at low cost or something.

If any of those games are good then I hope the PS3 can read them.

That's going to be a problem for those who own a 40gb, 8gb (new version) or the upcoming 160gb version/s of the playstation 3.

On a side note, Sony has stated that they will stop supporting for the ps2 in 2010 and I would figure 3rd party companies will as well soon after.

plans change, PS2 is still very profitable. i bet if you told Sony 2 years into PS3s life, after a price cut of 33%, PS2 would still be the better seller, somebody would have lauged at you. i wouldn't be suprised to see its life extended greatly, especially now that the system is open.

even if sony stops making 1st party games for it, the fact that nobody has liscensing fees and a 130 mil. install base to cater too + PS3s that are BC, makes creating games for PS2 possibly a very lucrative business.

I still want to see a PSP-sized PS2 for under $100.

..maybe DVD sized. Or PSP sized with a USB linkup to the PS3 so it takes over the optical drive like the MacBook air.

I'd like to see a few publshers release games that were wrongfully blocked by Sony earlier. I heard unconfirmed reports that SVC Chaos, Ys 1&2, and some others are in this category.

when I play PS2 games on my PS3 (1 year old this Christmas) They play for awhile then freeze up. It's annoying. I may buy a new PS2 when they get to be dirt cheep.

I've been wanting one since I have the 80GB PS3. There are a few games from last gen I didn't play/finish.
