Default SD DVD Upconversion ?

I, like many I suppose, still enjoy watching my SD DVD's from time to time. My bluray player is supposed to upgrade the picture to "near bluray quality", and on many DVD's the picture is quite good. That being said, I have noticed on a couple (28 days later, and star wars episode 1) that the picture is absolutely terrible. Why do some DVD's look so much better than others when "upconverted"?

Thanks.

Some dvds are/were mastered in high definition, as if they anticipated upconversion. which means like all dvds they are compressed, but fi this makes sense they kind of left a little window open to be interpreted better thru upconversion. Some movies like toy story and Star wars episode 3 have phenominal trasnfers form high def sources that shine on reg upconversion dvd players. Some of the special edition dvds that say digitally remastered, like a newer edition of happy gilmore i have also make for great upconverts.

at the end of the day, all upconversion is is a guess... some great dvd trasnfers especially the digitally restored or high def source transfers leave more clues/crumbs for the upconverting unit to pick up on... and that goes the same for bad dvds... sometimes the guess is almost spot on, but sometimes its a bad guess with ghosting and hazy looks abundant..

28 days later will never look good. I have it on Bluray and it looks like garbage. Its because it was filmed with standard handheld camera.
