Default Your thoughts on the PSN VOIP system

This is a poll to see what others think of the VOIP system and how it has been implemented by devs.
You may select more than one option.
My opinion is as follows:

My friends and I have noticed something that is in our opinion totally lame. The seemingly ever present "push to talk" button during online play. We find it is particularly annoying in "team" based games in which the point is to outplay/defeat the opposing team. Rather difficult to do with some intense shooters if you have to push L3 to talk.

The latest offender is SOCOM. Which was a shock, they did at least put it on a trigger button and not on the L3 but still should be open mic.

Some games are "open mic" but just for the first few in the room. example MGS4.

Others like Burnout paradise work great open mic.

We would like it to be open mic on all games especially for the team based game modes like "Team Deathmatch", "Attack & Defend" "CTF" well you get the idea.

I know you run into the occasional annoying idiot who thinks online plays is American idol tryouts. Or is a constant trash talker which is why all the games should give the host a "kick" option.

Agree completely. Open-mic needs to be an option on all online games

socom was always a PTT game. Open mic has its problems like the people that choose to play music while playing. Or people that play with alot of back round noise.

and that's the winner. With open mic , everything gets picked up, coughing, telephone ringing, music, everything. It's incredibly annoying. I've always used pushed to talk and it's always worked great. When I used to play counter-strike i always used pushed to talk on ventrilo. It's so annoying to have the mic pick up you breathing or just random noises. I want to know when i'm talking and when i'm not.

The poll is confusing.

And I agree with silversnake. PTT is good. Open mic if you're in a team.

open mic can be annoying! nothing worse then hearing a baby screaming in the background, while you are lining up a head shot with your barret .50cal

I agree background noise such as music etc. can be annoying that is why the host needs a "kick" feature. Also a "mute" feature can help you out here as well.
It really isn't as problematic as you think, you simply warn them nicely then kick them out of the match if they do not comply. I find losing matches because you cant coordinate you team much more annoying. The PTT systems always take a moment so if you are telling someone in a hurry they usually miss the first word or two. Trying use a PTT system while in a gun fight well just sucks.
I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with the poll results so far.

It's just as likely that your friends will have background noise as random schmoes. Are you really going to kick your friends because their girlfriend is watching a movie behind them?

Push to talk is the only answer. It just needs to be a convenient button. L3/R3 is never convenient.

I'm sorry, but, open mic is annoying...I heard some guy the other night fighting with his old lady..F-bombs were flying everywhere...I love what SOCOM has done...L2 is a perfect spot for it.

no matter what you play you will have people that are annoying. my 2 yrs experience on the xbox 360 has been that if you ask people nicely to adjust sound or whatever they generally do it and there is no problem. every single xbox game is open mic and thats the way it should be period this is not the age of the walkie talkie type of communication especially with the power of the ps 3 and it high end features. i just think with games as resistence 2 coming with 8 player co op and you and your buddies are going to town an open mic is better period. is it not the point of online play to socialize with other gamers whether it be with your friends or random people? what really gets me is that everyone is complaining about open mics but very few games have that feature and generally when you join games whatever the game may be at least half of the people don't even have mics to begin with. i really think that sony should of included a headset of some sort. and until this release of the official headset and the 2.50 update the mics were in my opinion hit or miss. open mics just makes things simple as long as the game has a mute feature and kick. and no i'm not an xbox fanboy. it's sad that i use my xbox as a communication for my ps 3 when it is the better console but lacks simple online gaming features.

For me it depends on the game, A game like COD4 with only 6 people is fine open mic. I do think the larger games Socom for example do work a little better push to talk but I only feel this way when there is a large team 12 or more. Reason being the size of the maps and the squads that can be all over the maps it can make it hard to get a word in if someone in a totally different area of the map is trying to at the same time.

I have a bluetoot head set (from my cell phone) but never botter to sync hit. I mainly play MGO and R2 beta, and I too often playing with people that don't know how coop work in R2 so I'm on the edge to sync my head set... but at the same time, my english is not that good :P so I'm a little shy!!

Anyway, most of the time I feel that the people talking are talking way too much to tel nothing... I've even encounter two guys in MGO that were talking about their weekend...

I prefer to have a button to talk because I feel it avoid too much of casual talking and I don't want people hearing when my baby is crying or my girl friends when she talk to me

The only problem there is this is going about cooperative play, muting them destroys team communication.

Further more in cases where there is a team of you and them, and they have there tv set to cnn at a high volume...

When I go through the processing of if I should mute someone, its a long process that requires pros and cons to be evaluated, what it will cost the team, and how best to deviate the cons produced by the action of mutting a single player in a team based game.

Since the muting of a single player is not simply my decision but a decision that affects the entire team it requires a thought out evaluation.

Since by muting the player you can cause a communication breakdown and further levitate your team to total loss because of the communication breakdown.

I vote for only allow the PS3 headset to work with the PS3.

Apparently it works really well and has little background noise associated with it.

Its true that there is a lot people with crappy headset and we can't hear much more than static noise... but I was wondering if it was because of the connexion or because of their headset?

But at the same time, I hate when a company force you to buy everything from them when you could easily use what you already have... like a keyboard, headset, webcam...

no i meant when you get a call or wife or girlfriend comes in while gaming and ask you something stupid you have the option of muting yourself so the rest of the team doesn't have to hear any of it.

no the mute button on the new headset just like every cell phone has a mute button when you don't want the other players to hear your background noise.
