Default Tell Lionsgate what you want from BD-Live!

Yesterday I was contacted by a post production house working with Lionsgate. They had enjoyed what I did on MoLog and read my review here. We arranged a phone conversation and spoke for maybe 45 minutes strictly about the future of BD-Live.

It would not be appropriate for me to reveal what he said to me, but rest assured new features are coming to BD-Live from Lionsgate.

What I can do is tell you my half of the conversation. I made several suggestions for things BD-Live could accomplish that would be attractive to film fans.

This individual wrote down my suggestions and is going to bring them to the production head today. He said he would email me later today to let me know how it went down.

In the meantime, I thought it would be helpful if we voted in a poll so they could see which items apeal most to core users. You can vote for as many as you want.

One that constantly gets mentioned is additional subtitles for other languages or the hearing impaired.

The only thing that might interest me is links to web-based information related to the cast, crew or the film in general, i.e. a link on ID4 to S.E.T.I.

We actually did talk about alternate language/subtitles. I had to be honest and tell him that didn't affect me although I would like the option of downloading english tracks for foreign films, though that's pretty unlikely.

I also mentioned that I really liked the bios on the Transformers downloadable screen layer. We actually spent several minutes talking about the Transformers stuff.

when I suggested the 3D Interactive environment, I was specifically thinking of the Bonus disc of the Nightmare on Elm Street box set. It was so cool to explore a dilapidated house with rooms to explore and stuff to find.

Unfortunately it would be pretty expensive to create and maintain. I suggested they speak to Sony about setting up an environment in Home for premiere titles or maybe all Lionsgate titles. I'm assuming Sony would help out with the cost of such a venture.

Offload all extras from the disc to leave more room for high bit-rate encodes and more lossless audio options.

I just spoke with him again and he is excited about this poll. It's really going to help his presentation, but he needs more people to vote.

We need your help to bring other BD fans here so we can get a bigger cross-section and clearer picture of which things people are interested in. Right now the industry doesn't know how much interest is out there so we aren't going to get more creative content unless we speak upand ask for it.

So email this page address to your friends and family, post it on other BD boards around the net and let's crank these numbers up!

Live streaming director commentaries, etc is something I am interested in. Especially in regard to older and foreign films for which extras may not be available immediately this could be something that they keep open and keep adding up features wherever they become available.

Replenishing content in that regard is certainly something that I would support.

I told him it was important that they not only stream but be able to be downloaded/stored.

I absolutely love the idea of the USER CREATED PIP COMMENTARY USING WEBCAM!!! If users take it seriously, it could be fun watching what other people's opinions of certain scenes would be.

The only thing I would even want would be the commentaries... not sure why they'd have to be live -- I'd imagine pre-recorded is better for several reasons (polish and a more steady flow on bandwidth requirements, vs burst requirements of live commentary - what happens when the connection drops because Lionsgate didn't pay for enough server bandwidth?), but I'd certainly take live commentaries if that's all there is.

Everything else I can honestly say I actually don't want - not that I wouldn't use it if offered, but I actually don't want to see at all. That's the gimmicky kind of stuff that's useless. I want real special feature downloads -- extra documentary that wasn't on the disc but was on the dvd (for whatever reason the *******s didn't include it), extra audio track commentaries recorded later on, etc. The legitimate uses of BD-Live rely completely on the willingness of a studio to produce or procure content after the sale, which is unlikely at best... I'd rather they not waste a post house's time with most of those things listed.

I don't want games, I don't want crappy 3d renderings or visual tours of things and the thought of web cam stuff seems absurd (assuming there's even a chance that's even possible - the install base for such a feature is going to be in the thousands... and there's only a fraction of that who'd think it would be worthwhile). Those are all wastes of everyone's time, if you ask me.

This poll seems to list the kind of features that I thought most of us were dreading from BD-Live... It seems I'm out of touch. I don't mean to be negative, but these options are just kind of baffling. General consensus a while back was that nobody cared about stuff like that.

If they provided commentaries after the fact, that would be a feature I'd be interested in (it was what I voted for).

I'd love to pop in a disc sometime and hit up the BD-Live section to find there was a new commentary track sitting there for me to listen to or some new 20+ minute documentary on the restoration or trouble during development or who knows what. The audio could be DD 2.0 and video in SD resolutions and I'd be quite happy.

I think a user generated commentary section could work by fulfilling a couple of different roles. Firstly it would give aspiring reviewers, film makers, and fans a way to share their thoughts about a film with the rest of the community. Secondly, it would allow those who actually made the film or participated in it's production to add new value commentary to a disc, similar in effect to the live filmaker commentary. In fact, the live commentary could be save and then added as a downlodable extra after the fact.

I would like to see the Scene Editing Suite which seems like it is very interesting as does the 3D enviroment, but we probably would not see the second except for high profile releases.

It would be nice if there was already a disk that had all of those features so we could see what we like. Is there one?

The only place these things exist is as ideas in my head with a couple of exceptions.

1) Hellboy II will have a comic book creator on it.

2) The Nightmare on Elm Street DVD Box Set has a 3D environment, so does The Abyss' DVD menu.

3) War has an online multiplayer game on it.

I like the PIP commentary. It would be awesome if you could watch the movie with friends and record your commentary on the movie and have it saved to your player like on the hard drive of your PS3 and anytime you put the movie in you can have the option of playing the movie with the saved commentary to show to other friends.

It doesn't have to be the video chat just the voice recordings I think that would be cool.
