Default Newbs starting threads

Granted, I am kind of new here and I apologise if this has been asked and answered

But...

I am noticing a lot of threads started by people with less than 5 posts (many with only one) asking inane questions like "is <insert movie name here> out yet on BD" Some boards have a filter keeping you from starting a thread until you have a certain number of posts (ie, you have at least been around long enough to read a thread or two before you can start a thread)... has anyone thought about doing that here???

Granted, to paraphrase BTBuck1, new people here is a good thing. But do we need some kind of controls to cut down on the incessant posts of newbness?

i mentioned this before as well, but it may have been in a PM. Ive seen sites were you cant start a new thread until you made 25 posts or so. Its a pretty good idea to cut the crap out.

This is starting to be noticed. I'm aware that the admins are busy working on some things at the moment. With many things they have done so far you are not aware of it. As this becomes a bigger issue it will gain a higher priority, then magically dissapear like some other annoying things around here have just quietly gone away. Thank you for raising it.

I don't really see a problem with it. If somebody has a question and they can't find an anwser, they should be welcome here. Unless the question is pointless. This is the best way to get help on using Blu-Ray Discs.

the problem is that half the threads started have been discussed. if a search is performed first, all the relevant info will pop up. and as ice stated, the "is XXXXX movie out yet" becomes tedious. we have the apocalist for that.

My small gripe is when reading threads about blu-ray news and announcements I see 5 posts saying "Great news for HD-DVD!". I don't really think those posts are needed they don't add any relevance or value to the thread.

Default those damned newbies

as a very tech tarded individual who is just getting to know how everything works I am new to how forums operate. so I read this page quite a bit because I have lots of questions. many are answered by simply checking this page with my pda every hour or so. a few times I haven't been able to find answers so I ask. and as with my thread ''there's a freeze up coming'' I was politely pointed to a previous thread that spoke about the same thing. I wasn't able to find it while doing a search. as was previously stated, it is probably a good thing that new people are asking dumb questions. if you want the support of the masses you'll get a lot of dumb people (just walk in a walmart or home depot and listen to customers). so dumb questions = more support for the beloved format. hail blu-ray. people just need to calm down a little. we're not all hardcore gamers.

That's what I meant by pointless. Movie releases can easily be found using Google.

It's not that there is a big "Problem" (yet) it's just that people come here for information, and it's up to "US", the users to make that information as easy to attain as possible. When you have 15 threads all asking the same thing, it makes it difficult to navigate the forums. Just like Sigs that have 7 lines w/ full size text (like yours) also make it difficult to navigate the forums as it adds to the scrolling of the page to find the info your looking for. Hopefully yourself and others will learn this educate over time here.

Dont' get me wrong, I am not talking about newb abuse or anything, I just think that if we require people to contribute to other threads before they start their own, everyone would have a better online experience.

Did we ever get a concensus on this??? I know we discussed, but it is only getting worse... Check out this thread....

Dear God... can we just stop the madness - and the superfluous, inane, waste-of-bandwidth postings?

seems to me the best way to gain knowledge is to ask questions. The whole concept of waiting till you have 25 posts seems kinda lame. Its hard to contribute knowledge to a product you don't have any knowledge about. With blu ray just now starting to go to average households there will be many "newbs" with an array of questions. though some questions are redundant and some retarted maybe the best solution is to answer them and move on.

The problem is that people don't know enough to know what they don't know, and the best way to learn is NOT to ask questions, the best way to learn is to do research, why do you think schools have reading assignments, rather than just asking the students "what would you like to learn today". In the case of the post above, 30 seconds on Wikipedia would have answered the question... you do a man no favors by "giving him a fish"

Seems rather arrogant to me. i came to this site in hopes to discuss and learn about blu-ray and products. I didn't realize i had enrolled in blu-ray school...

So I'm arrogant.... OK, personal attacks, THATS adult...

Forums as a rule are great sources of information, but like everything else on the net, there is an etiquette that some people just don't give a crap about.

New people tend to ask the same questions, OVER and OVER and OVER again... I am not judging them because they HAVE the same questions, only when they ASK them without first using the SEARCH button. By limiting the ability to START threads, the new people are FORCED to at least find the right place to ask the questions, and hopefully find the answers WHILE they are looking.... and with any luck, they will even find answers to questions they haven't asked yet.

twas no personal attack, only a view on what seems to be an arrogant thought. I understand your complaint, with new products comes new uneducated and undereducated consumers. Its something we have to deal with. i feel this argument is as unnessecary, if not more unnessecary than some of the useless questions "newbs" may bring up. But here i am participating and speaking on behalf of the more undereducated "Newbs."
