Default The Mummy And The Curse Of The Jackals (1969) coming from Severin

Quote:
SEVERIN SUMMER SALE TITLE REVEAL #3

THE MUMMY AND THE CURSE OF THE JACKALS

THE WORLDWIDE DISC PREMIERE
PLUS BONUS SEXPLOITATION FEATURE

Experience the notorious 1969 horror epic that’s been barely seen since its fly-by-night VHS release while existing mostly via sordid rumors for more than 50 years: Anthony Eisley (THE NAKED KISS, DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN) stars in this brain-melting mash-up of dubious Egyptology, risible werewolf transformations, H.G. Lewis-level gore, cut-rate psychedelia and an oven-mitted mummy on a Las Vegas rampage, all set to a swinging soundtrack of lounge and surf instrumentals. The legendary John Carradine (THE GRAPES OF WRATH, HORROR OF THE BLOOD MONSTERS) earns a day’s pay in this “truly incredible masterpiece of bad cinema” (Harbinger) written and produced by William Edwards (DRACULA THE DIRTY OLD MAN), directed by Oliver Drake (THE MUMMY’S CURSE) and scanned in 4K from the original negative discovered at Ewing ‘Lucky’ Brown’s Los Angeles estate sale, now with over 2 hours of Special Features that include the thought-lost Vega International adult feature ANGELICA, THE YOUNG VIXEN scanned from the sole surviving print.

Special Features:
• The Vega International Story – Interview With Stephen Thrower, Author Of Nightmare USA
• Cowboys, Mummies And Oliver Drake – Interview With Film Historian C. Courtney Joyner
• Investing In The Jackal – Interview With Garry Gassel, Son Of Investors Milton R. Gassel And Judi Gassel
• ANGELICA, THE YOUNG VIXEN (61 mins) – 1974 Vega International Adult Film
• Audio Commentary For ANGELICA, THE YOUNG VIXEN With Vinegar Syndrome's Joe Rubin And Exploitation Film Researcher Shawn Langrick

Feature Specs:
• Runtime: 81 mins.
• English Mono
• Closed Captions
• Region Free
• Aspect Ratio: 1.66:1

At first glance... this looks like utter crap...

But then I did some reading into it...

Apparently the same wolf man (aka "Jackal") mask that was used in this film was also used in Dracula, A Dirty Old Man.

I love that low budget gem... and this seems like it's gonna be in the same vein...

Plus a newly discovered negative? I guess previous incarnations looked pretty awful... we're talking 9th generation VHS... almost like some Alpha Video garbage...

As long as Severin doesn't make this over $30... I think I'll be getting it.

For nothing else... it would make a great schlocky double feature with Dracula, A Dirty Old Man...

P.S. - this is on both Tubi and YouTube if anyone wants to get a taste of it before it goes on sale during the sale.

While I like how colorful the new commissioned artwork is, it really doesn't seem match the tone and quality of the actual film itself whatsoever. It looks more like something for Wild Eyes's Visual Vengeance line.

Angelica, the Young Vixen intrigues me. Dixie Donovan was an actress whose work definitely needs more BD releases.

Agreed. It does make a great companion piece to Dracula, The Dirty Old Man, but unfortunately, it’s nowhere near as sleazy as enough. I’ve only seen it by way of what amounted to a seventh generation VHS copy viewed through Vaseline smeared lenses, so I can’t even imagine how this is going to look in HD.

When I owned my "all cult" video store in Seattle (1980s thru the 1990s), I passed on carrying the VHS release of this film. Having never heard of it, I assumed that it was a shot-on-video attempt at manufacturing a "cult" film.

Now, all these years later, I'll finally get to see what I "missed" by not stocking it.

Crazy that this is going to be out on blu-ray. This is by no means a good movie by any stretch of the imagination but it's my kind of trash.

I watched a few minutes of the linked Youtube copy of this movie. I immediately recognized the theme soundtrack as a composition of German composer Peter Thomas that is included as one of several extra Peter Thomas compositions on the cd disc of his "Fists of Fury" Bruce Lee movie soundtrack, that he composed for the US release. For some reason this Bruce Lee movie as released in the US was titled "Fists of Fury" (the Chinese film title for Lee's second movie, while the original Chinese title for this movie was "The Big Boss"). I noticed that someone else, not Peter Thomas, was credited on the credits for the music score of "Mummy & Curse of the Jackal."

On a related note, Dark Force Entertainment will be releasing another Oliver Drake film from 1969 on Blu-ray in July, namely RIDE A WILD STUD. The latter is reportedly another roughie western cut from the same leather cloth as THE SCAVENGERS and HOT SPUR.

Looks like a great restoration. But I didn't see anything problematic; I wonder why they "hid" it behind a sign in. The only thing I figure might have been the opening mummy scene (gun shots). Maybe just standard operating procedure? Anyway, I'm looking forward to the disc.

My summer sale stuff showed up, this was one of them, cool Mark Spears monster mash on the Vegas strip cover illustration. Started the film last night, really love the raw projected feel of it, colors are really nice. It’s goofy 1969 fun. Nice save Severin.
