Arrow Downloading PS3 ver 1.6 as I type this

Looks like I'll be the first kid on the block with these updates. Really looking forward to the background downloading feature and keyboard compatibility. I'll find out how those updates work in a few minutes if I can stay awake. No use for the PSP advances but I'm sure they'll make some gamers happy.

Hopefully Sony continues to update and enhance the PS3. I'm not complaining, but there is plenty of room for improvement in the menus and features.

Edit: Well, so far I am very unimpressed with the updates. The PS3 still seems practically incompatible with my USB keyboard based on a quick attempt to use the PS3's internet browser. What a joke of a browser. I sure hope the keyboard compatibility and the browser support are better addressed in a future update.

The supposed automatic resolution adjustment feature I read about is also nowhere to be found. Unless I'm missing something, I still have to manually change the settings when watching a standard DVD after BD and vice versa. Again, I hope this feature is addressed in a future update.

I did notice that 1.6 makes the PS3 automatically launch DVD playback when you slide the disc in. Before, I had to select the DVD or BD icon, unless I turned on the PS3 by placing a disc in it. Honestly I liked the earlier way better because it gave me the chance to select the output I needed wihout automatically launching the disc.

The only evident advantage to 1.6 that I can appreciate is the background downloading, which works flawlessly and places a cool arrow icon for "download management" under the "network" menu. Aside from this advantage, 1.6 appears to be a dud and we'll have to wait for future versions for better features.

The update doesn't appear to be available to me yet. I live on the west coast in los angles, california. It's 1:30 a.m. right now and no update. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Update downloaded and installed.

Only thing I tried so far is the keyboard.. much better than the old one.

I'm downloading it right now.

From what I've read this firmware also includes has a user selectable BD-ROM autostart at power up feature as well. I'm sure that will please all of the people who use it primarily as BD player.

LOL! It looks like there are a lot of PS3 users out there who want to cure a disease this morning! According to the current OS stats at folding@home:

Quote:
The database server is currently serving too many connections. Please try again in a few minutes.

Thank you

Opening up folding@home to the PS3 might have been the best thing to ever happen to this project.

Talking You Can Stop The Disc Autoplay

I found out how to turn off the auto disc start. It is under the settings menu and it is the 8th item down. I noticed that it will keep the PS3 from starting a movie or a GAME soon as you turn on the PS3 on. Now you can leave a disc in and not have to stop a movie/game evertime you turn on your system

I also noticed that you can now register a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

Things keep getting better all of the time.

Slightly off-topic, but the above quote caught my attention:
Please comment on the manual transitioning of resolution. What is it that you do? Do you choose 16:9 for SD DVD and then revert to automatic resolution before playing BD?

Rup.

Rup.
There is no need to manually change the res.

When I play and SD-DVD it automatically downconverts to 480p. When I stop playback and go the XMB it changes back to 1080p automatically and if I play a BD it stays at 1080p.

I didn't get a chance to check any of the update features except to turn off disc start. They had this in PSP for a while I don't know why it wasn't included in the PS3 at launch.

Really?! Maybe it's a compatibility problem with my display, then.

I have to go into the display settings and actually change the connection type from component 1080 to S-video 480 to get standard DVDs to resolve on my plasma. If I don't, the low-res content appears as a small, greenish picture in the center of my screen.

That sucks, The only time I manually change res is browsing the net but after this update I shouldn't have to. I will check that when I get home.

You don't need a firmware update to not launch a game automatically. Just hold X after you power the machine on and it will boot right to the XMB. Movies of course, are another story.

I know about that but I want to turn the thing on and walk away or not have to worry about holding a button down. As I said in a previous post this option was already available on the PSP and should have been standard on the PS3 at launch.

The greenish is because it's sending the signal in a diferent color space (one is Ybr, the other RGB, you need to check the color space settings)

The smal size is because it's sending the 480 inside the 1080 or your display is set 1:1 and should be set to zoom/wide, that kind of stuff, or maybe you have to select betwen 1080 component and 480 component?

I've never had to manually adjust my resolution settings either, but I have my ps3 hooked up HDMI, not component.

Guess the problem is with connectivity/display device. I've done some troubleshooting, but the only way to get the appropriate picture is by changing the settings on the PS3. Too bad. I was hoping the 1.6 update would fix it. Looks like I will just have to deal with it until I get another plasma.

I like the update. It works flawlessly with my MX5000.

The only hook is using the arrow key instead of tab key to move around. Zoom really helps me see the screen so much better.
