blu has been on the market for 2+ years now, so its only fair to say 1998.

but blu is holding up fine with DVD sales at the point in DVDs life.

If memory serves, DVD players were not out in the United States until spring of '97.

Summer of '97 is when I got my 1st DVD player, a Sony unit that performed like a champ for me until ~2006

And in 1999 the matrix came out and when it came out on DVD it was DVD only so maybe next year 2009 we might get our first BD only movie and that movie will be quantum of solace

I remember when DVDs came out we were all introduced to a world of skiping and freezing, something that VHS never did.

I bought Wild Wild West on dvd and watched it on my eMachine 550 PC. I had
7 dvds before i bought a $250 sony player. Have to check the model # because it did not perform well. Dirty disk errors on new dvds and would overheat in 2 hrs and freeze up. I sould have bought a PS2. I bought an Xbox a year later and that was my dvd player for years.

I got my first DVD player in the fall of 07. It was over $600, a Toshiba. (Portable DVD players were $1200.00!) I remember it didn't like Columbia/Tri Star DVDs for some reason and every once in a while they would skip. DVDs were $29.99 to $34.99 (sound familiar?) and that was when they were on sale. (Warner's discs were the least expensive priced at $24.99 retail).

The next DVD player I bought was about $130.00 but that was a few years later and was all regions.

It took a long time before DVDs actually started to come down in price.

Bought my first DVD player in 1997 for $800.00. I think the only movie they had available was JUMANJI.

I got my first dvd player in 1997, and my first "progressive scan" model (Panasonic RP-56) in 2001, when I bought my first HDTV (Mitsubishi 65" Platinum Plus series). It was heaven at the time. Look how far things have come since then!

That isn't true at all. I worked in a video store at that time and the matrix was the most expensive VHS to come out. I believe it was priced at $112 each. I have a VHS copy of the movie. The VHS price later came down as did all movies after they were on the rental market for awhile. Now everything is priced to buy right away.

People that left VHS tapes in the sun were usually shocked at the replacement prices of new vhs movies.

The VHS of Matrix came out about 3 months behind the DVD. It was late november if memory serves, while the DVD was 2nd week of September.

Rental VHS was usually around $85 wholesale

you can't compare players. The reason that it is not faire is that you either count the PS3 and then BD is doing a lot better or you don't and DVD was doing better. Neither scenario is real faire, but if you want DVD player sales http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...advdsales.html

I remember getting my first DVD in March 97 for about $899. AND at that time only 5 cities in the US had any DVD movies, NY, Chicago, LA, SF & Seattle, so living in Portland, I had this COOOL DVD player... but no movies! But a few months later, a couple DVD's started to trickle into stores. I think my first movie was Twister... it was all about Circuit City back then cause we didn't have a Best Buy yet. Then I bought Alien Ressurection and it wouldn't play on my DVD player... until the Circuit City clerk told me cause it only plays on a DIVX DVD player... I was pissed! But made sense after that why I got a new movie for only $4.99! lol - joke was on me! I still have it! I think that christmas the DVD players (good ones) were going for $499 for the holidays. And here I thought the video was so awesome in S-Video output!!! lol - And $25 for a DVD movie next to a $120 VHS movie of the same title! I was in heavan!! Even back then though, it was whinning and moaning about wanting movies on DVD that were only on VHS - hell it took almost 10 years to get Star Wars! Even though I had already bought like 5 different version of SW on VHS.

I bought my first DVD player, a Sony DVP-S530D model, in April of 1999. I bought 3 DVDs at the time I bought that player: the 20th Anniversary Edition of Alien, Aliens Special Edition and Blade.

I had quite a growing collection of DVDs by the time The Matrix hit store shelves that September. Additionally, I had spent a good $3000 on new Paradigm surround sound speakers and a pretty decent Yamaha receiver.
