Post USA Exclusives?

Hey, so I'm off to the States in June and I did try searching around but couldn't find a definitive list of what USA Exclusive blu-ray releases. I was wondering if anyone could help me out, in some way?

Thanks in advance for any information and help.

- Moka.

WELL I might be able to help you here... I live in the States temporarily but normally live in the UK, and a few weeks ago I decided to list all the movies I own on DVD and their availability in the US and UK, and the difference between some US and UK versions:

I've pointed out regions for the blu ray discs but bear in mind that any extra DVD copies that come with US releases WILL be region 1, not region free. Also any digital copies will require a US billing address on your itunes account in order to use them. ALSO US standard BD cases are thinner than the UK ones.

The following are not out in the UK (at least yet) and are region free:
Boogie Nights (released in uk soon)
Road to Perdition (released in uk soon)
Mad Men (season 3) (released in uk soon)
Misery
Firefly (the complete series)
Dollhouse (season 1)
Weeds (seasons 1-3)
South Park (movie+available series)
Simpsons (season 20)
The Terminator (the first one)
Basic Instict 2 (!)
A Bug's Life
The Fifth Element (make sure you get the newer remastered version, but no version at all is out in the UK)
Gangs of New York (remastered version, far superior to the original release version which is all that's out in the UK)

The following are not out in the UK but are region A locked and need a region free player (like I have )
Lives of Others
Dexter (all seasons)
Carrie
The Graduate
Volver
Weeds (seasons 4-5)
Donnie Darko
X-Files: flight to the future (the first movie)
Princess and the Frog
All Criterion collection releases are US only and region locked, most have not been released in any form in the UK. They include, Paris, Texas, The Third Man (now out of print), Howard's End, Last Emperor, Summer Hours, Days of Heaven, Seventh Seal, 8 1/2, Hunger, M... check the thread for more)

The following are out in the UK but the US release is superior/different:

Blade Runner
(same transfer; UK one is 2 disc 'final cut', US one has 5 discs and all cuts) (region free)

Wizard of Oz
(the 3 disc emerald version has a nicer cover and an extra documentary DVD, not that much different but i prefer it. there's also a big collectors edition with extra features and memorabilia) (region free)

Gone with the Wind
(a similar collectors edition with extra features and memorabilia is available, but the UK version is good enough for me)

Casablanca
(again, a collectors edition with extra special features etc is available) (region free)

Lots of Warner releases like Dr Strangelove, Bonnie and Clyde, Amadeus, Shawshank Redemption, the Matrix, Goodfellas, North by Northwest, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest have special 'digi book' packaging in the US - some people like it more than standard casing (all region free)

All of the Disney classics/Pixar films released on BD before this year were released in steelbook packaging and many BestBuy stores still have at least some of them in stock. (Up and Snow White only available as empty cases; all are region locked except for Cars, A Bug's Life and Monsters, Inc.) There are more steelbook cases available in the Us in general, do some reasearch if you're into them.

Shawshank Redemption
(US version has lossless audio, UK one doesn't. Video transfer is different, I think most people think there isn't much of a difference or the US one is slightly superior)

The new packaging for Battlestar Galactica contains the miniseries The Plan, but you can still get that seperately in the UK, which has nicer packaging.

This isn't everything, I suggest thinking of the movies first (the movies you want to get) and then going from there (I'm not one to blind buy based on availability if I have no interest in the film). Happy shopping!

Probably would help to know what genres you're looking for.

My film interests are far too vast. I love romcoms, action, thriller, horror, outright comedies, fantasy, sci-fi, animation...basically, everything.

Nametag, you are legendary. Thank you so much for that list. Thankfully, I already managed to get Firefly for a steal of £16 from a user on the AV forums. I'll be sure to pick up A Bug's Life, Terminator and Fifth Element. Honestly, thank you so much for your post. It was so helpful. =) I don't suppose you know if there's any difference between the picture/audio quality between the US and UK versions of Serenity?

Currently staying in Vegas, flying home on Monday. Any more US exclusives been released since February, that anyone knows about? Region encoding, if you know, is useful. Thanks!

Happy to help. Though I fell you're going to be very sad that you have to read through so many pages because the thread hasn't been organised by the OP.

Gangs of New York is released in Europe (not sure of UK though since I'm not interested in it).

Mr. Brooks has not been released in UK but has been released in USA and in Scandinavia.

Entertainment in Video Released Gangs of New York here in the UK a few years ago. Unfortunately, it is the old DNR transfer. They have yet to re-release the disc with the new, improved transfer.

Ah my bad. Yes, it is released in UK but the US transfer is remastered which makes it superior. =)

Thought I'd bump this again, rather than making a new thread. Going to the US again in 2 weeks so wondering what else (aside from what has already been listed) you guys might recommend to get, that is not available in the UK. Many thanks for any help!
