Right now I'm going to be getting the Onkyo 806 receiver. I have a ps3 as my blu ray player and I wanted to know if linear pcm will work for this receiver?.. and why does it even matter if the receiver would accept the audio or not since the ps3 is doing all the work? Also, does this receiver do bitstream? and can the ps3 do bitstream?
thanks. |

whats up fellas first post by the way. I've got the 805 and read a couple of threads on this issue. I understand the how the ps3 sends or passes the audio either thru linear or bitstream the same to the receiver ethier way. But i wanted to test it on my own to see if there was a difference . And to my surprise , setting the Ps3 on bitstreaming i clearly see a slight difference. The imaging is better , there's more "umf" especially when i put blu movies like the incredible Hulk, cars, iron and even old dvd like stealth on regular dts. makes a difference . I go back and forth on the same scenes by switching it from linear and bitstream. To me it sounds better on bitstream "richer sound , full ". I even called onkyo support and they recommended to leave it at bitstream. I have the settings on my Ps3 volume at 2 on linear and by switching back to bitstream i notice its sound powerful, richer and even little things like rain drops or tiny sounds especially the sub kicks in more when the receiver decodes it. The other guys in here might disagree but do a test on your own your hearing will the best judge.

With my PS3 at 2, there were noticeable problems with audio. By bitstreaming you are bypassing the internal volume on the PS3, hence the sound difference in clarity. |

Make sure you are selecting the HD audio from the menu, many movies don't default to HD audio still. Ultimately go with what sounds best to you, but I'm willing to bet you'll find much more clarity and detail...
