Default Audio retard and need help

I just bought a Harman Kardon AVR 254 and I need help. I have always owned HTIB's but got a early christmas gift and i need to know the basics. I have a Sony lcd tv and a ps3. what are some good (and cheap cause i'm in the military) speakers? good sub? banana plug or rca style hookup? I know it's past veteran's day but could you all help out this Marine over here? Thanks in advance.

Banana plugs, or regular stripped speaker wire on binding posts, right?

That you could also plug banana plugs into.

you will be disappointing if you expect a sound difference between banana plugs and bare wire.

Banana plugs are pretty convenient, though.

These sound fantastic. Total 5.1 package is $799.00. You can demo them at Bestbuy Magnolia. I do not know what you consider cheap as you can spend two to three times more for one speaker. These will probably make you happier in the long run if you are trying to get away from HTIB.

In re: Banana plugs I find they give a nice clean look when connecting your speakers. It is also easier to get a nice clean connection IMHO.

banana plugs it is. I like a easy setup and a clean look. And cheap to me is below $1000.00 but I want more for less.

It's tough to get a pair (4ea plugs) for less than $5, and like others have said, bare wire is FREE and just as good. Sure you can just plug in a banana plug, but not before you strip the insulation, insert the wire, and tighten the binding screw (which is all brass, btw. Maybe gold plated but it's still brass and you can strip that retaining screw with just more than finger tightening). It's really not any easier than bare wire or anything else...it's all a gimmick.
For example, the little time I worked at Best Buy and got stuff for dirt cheap, I bought some of those plugs. The shelf price was >$5 for a four peice set...I got them <$1 (10% over COST).

How's that for an overpriced gimmick!?!?!

no no no, do not use RCA (composite) connections! Buy an HDMI cable from www.mycablemart.com, or www. monoprice.com (for all your cabling needs). Don't buy those retail/local...always wayyyyyyyyyyy overpriced.

I have been in since 1998 and it's been a he'll of a ride so far. But when I was asking about banana or RCA style, I was talking for speaker connections only. I have been using monoprice since I started checking this site back in early 2007.
