Default "Beauty and the Beast" to Get 3-D Makeover

From Variety...

Quote:
"The Mouse House is adding "Beauty and the Beast" to its already packed dance card of 3-D pics it will unspool over the next two years.

Disney is re-rendering "Beast" using its Disney Digital 3-D technology, and will release the film in 2010. A specific release date has yet been set.

Pic's original team of filmmakers, including producer Don Hahn and co-directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale will oversee the process, along with Sara Duran-Singer, senior VP of worldwide post production at Walt Disney Feature Animation.

The re-rendering is expected to take about nine months to complete.

"By going back to the original animation files, which have been carefully archived for 17 years, and using the separate background, effects and character animation elements, we're able to come up with a fun and unique 3-D experience for existing and new fans of the film," Hahn said.

Studio's release sked already includes 10 other films bowing in 2009 and 2010 -- more than any other studio. It's bowing the 3-D version of "Bolt" this weekend.

Next year's slate includes the "Jonas Brothers 3-D Concert Movie," Pixar's "Up," Jerry Bruckheimer's "G-Force," and Robert Zemeckis' "Disney's A Christmas Carol."

In 2010, the sked includes Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," "Toy Story 3," "Rapunzel," and "Step Up 3."

Disney is also re-rendering "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" in the 3-D format to bow in 2009 and 2010."

I dunno bout this one! I mean, its not like "Beauty" is 'broken.' Does it really need more than a solid BD transfer? I dont think so. Iam keeping my fingers crossed. Lets hope for the absolute best on this one.

I hope not on this one, for me I am not a fan of 3D cinema. I love Beauty & The Beast the way it is and I think it will look incredible on a BD transfert, so far Disney as done very well on BD.

harry potter most likely will be in 3-d. they did the order of the phoenix in 3-d and will most likely do the rest that way. i'm sort of surprised they didn't 3-d for the dark knight actually. but since it was already shot in imax i guess they felt that was gimmick enough.

So wait, are they completely cg-ing the entire film, replacing all of the hand drawn sequences, or are they going back and adding/updating the 3D effects to compliment the 2d hand drawn cells?

Not sure about this, but if this means we will get more Pixar on Blu-ray, I am all for it.

A documentary about legendary reggae star Bob Marley, which has been authorized by Marley's family. The film is set for release on February 6, 2010, on what would have been Marley's 65th birthday.

I suspect they are taking the various animated (hand-drawn) elements and placing them in different planes. They converted an old short and showed it 3D before "Meet the Robinsons". The 3-D cartoon short was very fake looking and annoying. I hope they have improved the process.

Yeah, I know that, but with Pixar fully under Disney know, if this process means they are more willing to put Pixar movies on Blu-ray, I am down with that.

Good God. I'm already tired of the 3D revolution. Just release the freakin' movies, already.

'Chamber of Secrets' has so many effects that would look great in 3D

Not me, I don't really like 3D movies, as long as they still offer them the old fashion way and don't force me to watch them in 3D then it's ok, those that love 3D can watch it and I can watch it the way I like

I am in total agreement. Journey To The Center of The Earth looks FANTASTIC in 3-D on my 52-inch Sharp Aquos LCD.

My only beef is that I wish I could program a preset for watching 3-D BDs. One must crank up the brightness and turn down the contrast a by about half the nrmal setting (and slightly lower the overall color setting) to obtain eye-popping 3-D on this Aquos. I'm sure it's the same thing for other LCDs, DLPs and Plasmas.

I use the same settings for Polar Express in 3-D and it works brilliantly.

Remember to watch your 3-D movies in an extremely dark room. It makes a huge difference.

I will definitely get the 3-D versions of Beauty and The Beast and Toy Story(s). My 3-D wish list includes Harry Potter and Beowulf.

Do I dare hope that the original black and white 3-D version of Creature From The Black Lagoon will one day make it to BD? It's one of Universal's finest Monster Classics.

The only 3-D film I did not enjoy was Jaws 3-D. That movie had a fishy storyline.
