Default Win DVD 9

I just got a new HP laptop with BlueRay drive. I tried a Blueray disc with the BlueRay software that HP provides and it looked like a regular DVD so I purchased Win DVD 9 Plus BluRay. I installed it with the latest patch. When I click on Play it starts the disk and then drops back into the program. Anyone have any ideas ?

I bought one of the LG drives and these drives pretty much come with PowerDVD Suite 1.0. I have a couple of questions for you dpeters. How are you? First, what type of video card is on this laptop? Are the drivers up to date with this videocard? Is the video card HDCP compliant for Blu-Ray playback? Secondly, what drive is on this laptop and what is the model number of the laptop? Third, how much memory is installed on the laptop? Next, which operating system is running? I've seen a blu-ray movie on a Vista based machine and XP machine, and the XP machine ran much better than the Vista. Vista tends to eat the heck of resources on a system. Lastly, see if you can get a full refund for the purchase of Win DVD 9 Plus Blu-Ray and try Arcsoft Total Media. The trial version worked for me with any HD-DVD or Blu-Ray I threw at it. Let me know what's going on. Oh, by the way. Try restarting the laptop.

- HP Pavilion HDX16t Entertainment Notebook
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
- Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)
- 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
- 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
- FREE Upgrade to 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
- Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
- HP Color Matching Keyboard
- Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
- Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer

I installed all the latest drivers from HP except the BIOS but I don't know if the BIOS is out of date.

I hate Vista also. Even on this super fast laptop it still tales to long to boot up. Does XP support BlueRay. I would really like to get Win DVD 9 working as I don't think I can get a refund.

If you'd read the handbook / directions that came with it, you wouldn't be having problems. Sorry to be blunt, but I deal with this several times a week on both the HDX Forum and here. Nothing like following directions - problem is, no one ever bothers to read them. It's the neat black handbook that came with your HDX, assuming that's what they're still sending out.

First - get rid of WinDVD. OEM copies are not customized to work with your system and you'll just be beating yourself in the head trying to get it to work, despite what the idiots at HP Support are saying. In fact they finally released a support bulletin after several months that has what I've been putting out here for the same amount of time.

HP QuickPlay is the customized version of Cyberlink PowerDVD that your HDX uses for BD playback. If you've removed it, you're screwed until you put it back. HP does have a download for the individual program if you have removed it.

QuickPlay needs to be updated to the latest version to play the current BD movies. Start up QP (the Q icon to the left of the DVD quicklaunch button) or go to Start/All Programs and run it from there. Click on the gear icon, then update to run the update program. Current version is 3.7 and change.

If you're having long startup problems, set ShellHWDetection to another setting besides Automatic, which is the default - it's been found to cause long startup times in some Vista Home Premium systems. Other than that, if you've got more than 6 icons in your System Tray, including Power Options and Volume, you'll start having startup slowdowns on a 32 bit Vista system. There's a program I both use and recommend to clients called Memory Boost (Tenebril.com, in the Utilities section - it has a 15 day full trial version). While you probably don't need it, its Detective feature makes it easier to find problem background processes that hog memory that you don't need to run at system startup. Once you figure out which ones are slowing you up, use SysConfig to edit your system startup routine so it's faster.

NotebookReview.com has an HDX 16 Owners Lounge, just as those of us with 20" HDX Dragons do. You might want to check it out for more information.

Vista's a good OS, you just need to have the right hardware configuration and the right Vista edition.
