Default PS3 vs Blu Ray Player

Guys
Is it worthwhile buying a dedicated Blu Ray player or should I stick to my PS3?
Which is the best value for money player on the market at the moment?

Alot of guys on here will say the PS3, Blu player and game machine. But it depends if all you want is a player and not interested in video games then a stand alone is the best bet. Wife and I are empty nesters so we don't need video games for the kids, and prefer stand alones for performance and looks when in the rack with the other components.

PS3 wins in many ways.

One big advantage of a stand alone player is energy consumption. I think a PS3 uses about 3x as much energy as a stand alone unit.

One big advantage to the PS3 is you get more than a perfect Blu Ray player ... it's also a multi-media computer. It can do many things that the stand alones can not do for example if you have any media servers in your house you can access the music, pictures, and videos from the media servers on the PS3 wirelessly.

I have a PS3 and for me it's perfect apart from maybe the energy consumption.

Since you already have your PS3, I'd say you already have your solution. It is viewed as one of the best, and certainly the most versatile/upgradeable, Blu-ray players available.

I think the PS3 would be best. I don't know about you but waiting 2-3 minutes for my BD to load is not an option. and from what I've heard a lot of players take this time to load. Plus the PS3 tells you when it needs to be updated, and you can store your pictures or videos on the HDD. it's pretty much just awesome

if you already have a ps3, i don't see any reason to spend extra money for something that will do the exact same thing...unless you just want to spend extra money? the ps3 is a great player. why buy another??

It could also depend on what other equipment you have. I have had the PS3 as my primary Bd player for the past 6 months and have been very happy with it.

However, I just got the new Panny BD35 player and have since rekindled my love for blu-ray. As far as PQ, I din't think there is much of a difference. Load times may be slightly slower but not enough to deter me back to the PS3. Where I am seeing a difference is the audio. I can finally bitstream the HD audio to my Denon 3808 receiver. WOW! the difference is night and day. My Denon handles the HD codecs far better than the PS3 decoding and sending them via LPCM.

If all you have is a TV or an older receiver AND you are into gaming, then the PS3.

If you want a good BD player with relatively fast load times, then get a Panny 35 or 55 depending on whwther or not you have a reciever that can handle HD audio.

6 months ago I would have said PS3 all the way. I almost got a 2nd PS3 for my bedroom. My roomate left for a month and I put his in my room. I only used it 3 times and realized that I really did not want another PS3. With stand alones dropping in price, I would get one for a 2nd player. If it was a first bluray player I would get a PS3 still as there are alot of things the PS3 can do that standalones can not. Even if there is a remote chance you will play games, I would get a PS3. You can get some great games VERY cheap now.
