After the HDMI output on my 60GB PS3 failed after a couple of years of just playing movies, and Sony's only option was give them $149 or f-off, I chose to f-off and buy a non-Sony product as the replacement.

Your "best" may be different than others...WRT BD PQ you won't see much of a difference between players. For DVD the OPPO will give you better upconversion. Why not just pay to have the laser replaced? That way you still have all of the other things that the PS3 has going for it (i.e. multimedia player, updates, gaming, etc.)

The Oppo is the only player that competes with the PS3 and it costs more and does less.
I would consider an Oppo someday but if my PS3 stopped working I could get a exchange from Sony for $149 and my PS3 does many things the $500 Oppo can't. It has better build quality as well. PSN network adds a lot to the PS3's capabilities and offers many free videos and games and so on. New FW is coming to make the PS3 3D compatible for games and movies if your interested in that. I use my PS3 to read content from my home's Media Server and also use the PS3's web browser. (This is the longer version of my answer.) -Brian |

Ultimately, the PS3 is the most future proof player out there. It's Sony (Inventor of Blu-ray) flag ship player. Honestly how can you go wrong. Plus, it really does do everything. Really, really well. |

Which doesn't have a fan, which means it's more prone to overheating if it's not out in the open. I had one for a day or two and it damn near melted a Blu-Ray of mine it was so hot, this was with plenty of room on all sides inside my cabinet with the door open.
The Oppo BD80 is $10 less and is a better Blu-Ray player, as opposed to being a power hogging space heater like the PS3. |

The BDP-80 costs less than the PS3 and offers some things that the PS3 doesn't (multichannel analog output, DVD-Audio support, IR remote without paying extra). If you want the PS3's gaming capabilities, then the equation changes, but that's true of any standalone player.

Hi,
I can't address the loudness issue since my PS3 is outside my HT so I've never heard it's fan. If your stuff is in the same room then sure I suppose sound output is a definite issue. I won't consider the multi-channel analog sound output because I've gone to the trouble of getting a HDMI AVR and it wasn't difficult or expensive and I recommend embracing HDMI as it's a great way to reduce cables. So,.. I also didn't realize there was an Oppo that costs less than the PS3... that's great. I have a SACD that I enjoy and an Oppo is a possibility for me sometime in the future. For now... If my PS3 breaks out of warranty, I can get it replaced for $149. Can you do that with ANY other blu ray player?? I suppose any player less than $149 wouldn't count. ![]() Anyway... If ever they can't exchange my PS3 for one that still plays SACD's then I will consider the Oppo players. They appeal to me but not as much as the PS3. If you read about a disc not playing it's either a defective disc or a Blu Ray player that is not a PS3. That's a big consideration for me. I believe the PS3 remains the most reliable and the most full featured player. -Brian |

Not in the same manner like XBOX 360,Believe me if you are watching movies or playing games you can barely heard it or never unless you are focusing on it ,unless you are sitting beside your PS3.What it is important and as i know so far PS3 if it is well ventilated No problem with a loud fan.Count on it

Second, and let me be perfectly clear here, the Oppo is NOT a better Blu-ray player than the PS3. Neither is the PS3 a better Blu-ray player than the Oppo. They are both on PAR for Blu-ray playback. Last edited by tilallr1; 02-16-2010 at 02:34 PM. |
