Default Noob HDMI receiver to TV setup help.

Sorry for the apparent basic question.

So I finally got my new Polk Monitor 70s, Polk CS2, and Sony STR-DG720 receiver yesterday. Setup between that and my PS3 was a breeze (Master and Commander never sounded better).

However, for the life of me I havent been able to hook the receiver to the TV. I have a 50" Sony Bravia SXRD KDS-50A3000 which naturally has 3 HDMI slots.

I attempted to run a HDMI cable from my cable box to my receiver, then receiver to the TV but got no picture or sound. At first I assumed that I may have to use some of the optical cables and connect them from the box to receiver, but in my mind that didnt seem right (as I assumed HDMI would take care of everything).

Any help here would be appreciated. You guys have been a big help so far during my decision making process to gather all this equipment, for which I am thankful.

First... congrats on your awesome new setup. How do you have everything connected? The cable box and PS3 should both go to the HDMI Ins and the TV should be connected to the HDMI out on your receiver. Also, make sure that your tv is set on the correct input. (though, in some cases it automatically detects)

Ya the input on the tv was set correctly (I used the same input as when I was connecting it via HDMI to the cable box).

Perhaps I would have to change the input on the receiver? But I would assume it would automatically figure that as well.

At the end of the day I do not need the opitcal (red/blue/green/etc) cables for any reason though, correct?

Hmm... what mode is your receiver currently on? I'm looking through the owner's manual now. Have you tried toggling between the inputs on your receiver remote? Make sure it is on whatever input your Blu-ray player is connected.

Well, for the BD there is a BD input that doesnt work for the TV. The TV hdmi cord is connected to the SAT hdmit input in the back of the receiver. When I change the receiver input to SAT thats when I can hear the sound but no photo.

I can even hear the sound if the TV is off.

Ok. Do this:

1. Plug an HDMI cable from your PS3 to "BD IN"
2. Plug an HDMI cable from your cable box to "SAT IN"
3. Plug an HDMI cable from your TV to "OUT"

Then switch the receiver's input to BD. You should get sound and picture from your PS3.

Ya that's the setup I have now. When I switch to BD the PS3 (picture and sound) works great. When I switch to SAT I only get sound.

Could it be because I still have optical cable plugged into the back of my cable box? They aren't plugged into anything on the other end, but I'm not sure if maybe it messes with the signal it puts out.

Try unhooking the component cables (red, blue, green). You wont need them here. Then, restart your cable box/satellite and see if it makes a difference.

I continue to be amazed at the sheer power of simply turning something off then turning it back on.

Worked like a charm.

Thanks for the help on this.
