Default Distance from TV

I'm planning on getting a new HDTV for my bedroom. I want a big one but my room isn't very big. The distance from the TV would be around 8ft maybe upto 10ft. I was thinking of getting a 42inch Sony 1080p. Is this too big for the size of my room?

A TV is never too big

To see all the details 1080P has to offer you should sit about 1x to 1.5x picture widths away from your tv/screen. So 42 inch is 3.5 feet which makes this tv almost too small for 1080P

I bought me a 32" LCD HDTV for my bedroom. It is a very small room. I am about 5ft away and it works great.

Exactly!

I bought a 50" and almost immediately wondered if I should have gone for a 60". However the price difference is thousands to go just that bit bigger.

I'd say at least 50" for that size room, minimum.

I'm about 10ft from my 50" 1080p, and I think I could have even went bigger. I'm happy with the size, though..

I'm 9.5 feet from my 56" 1080p, and I think it's the perfect size. If I went a little bigger, I don't think it would have been too big, but I think I got the right size one for my room.

This is a good chart i think. I sit about 8 feet away from my 50" and think i could have gone with 56"

Thanks for the chart and all the help. Really appreciate it. I'll probably get a 46' and just bring my chair in closer
Am I right in thinking that the higher the contrast the better the TV? I've seen two 46' TV's that I'm interested in. One has a contrast raitio of 1.500 and the other 1.1800

You know, most movies on-screen don't reach 700p for their height (both Scope and 1.85 heights) (respectively, 1700 and 1300, width) (thats why 2k works as DI) and the Lucasfilm TAP recomends the closest good seat be at 1.4PH (picture heights) and the LAST (<--remember: the last one. LAST. Against the BACK WALL. the one in the theater that makes the screen seem the TINIEST) be at 3.6PH. We have Scope at 800p and 1.85 at 1040p. You do the math.

That will be small, you can go 70" at 10 ft

If you want a 'movie threater' like room this will help:

I am 7 ft from my 50" & wish I got the 55", but I can move the tv 1' closer, so I may do that at some point.
