2 Questions if I may:
1. I have an older HD Toshiba TV that does not support 720p. Is there a way that I can configure the PS3 so that it ups it to 1080i like the XBox 360 does? I think I read somewhere that if a game is 720p and the TV does not support 720p it goes down to 480 for the PS3. Is this true? If so is there anything I can do? 2. I notice that most Blu Ray movies are 1080p and as stated above my older tv is just 1080i for the highest and no 720p. If I buy Blu Ray movies will they still be HD or will they get bumped down to 480? Any help is appreciated. Thanks! |

1. you can manually select what formats to output video as..also, yes..some games do not support 1080i, so, they will bump the resolution down, unfortunately...
2. your tv will get the signal and configure it accordingly...if your tv is set at 1080i, then, the movies will play at 1080i. Good luck! |

Yeah, 1080i is just fine for Blu-ray movies because all Blu-rays support all of the resolutions, except for a few that max out at 1080i, but then your TV could de-interlace it anyways.
For games though, some of them, maybe even many of them, do not support 1080i at all. Its a huge bummer, but the fact is that its a much higher resolution than 720p so some games just will not run acceptably in 1080i. Double unfortunately is that not all developers implement a software method to convert the 720p signal to 1080i. The 360 doesn't ever have this problem because it has a dedicated scaler chip. That particular chip doesn't yield great image quality, but it does garuntee a simple way to make all games play on all TVs at all output resolutions. |
