its very subjective but it would help to know what range you are looking in

amp quality is usually judged in price ranges or classess similar to cars.

most people will tell you onkyo but to each his own. I have used onkyo harman kardon and sony and they did a worthy job. The issue is its hard to get apples to apples with amps.

I've always been partial to Denon, though I am a fan of Yamaha, as well. Unnecessary DSP modes aside, they have a great sound to them and are among the better quality (and in greater quantity) in the low end price range.

As others have said, "best" is relative. Although if you truly want to be a purist, amps are the way to go.

I'm fairly new to this Home Theater hobby and i don't have much to compare it to...but my Onkyo 805 has served me well I've also heard many good things about Denon, Yamaha and Marantz

Based on the poll, you should have asked who makes the best low-end to mid-fi receivers.

The candidates in this poll are all average manufacturers, they make very, very good products, however there are other much more expensive Hi-Fi manufacturers that make vastly superior receivers.
Two candidates: Meridian & Lexicon

Also after recent side by side comparison, Denon is definitely no better than the rest represented here, and certainly not better than the newest Pioneer Elite series.

For the manufacturers on the list, I'd have to say Yamaha. The Yamaha RX-Z11 is absolutely stunning.

There are a lot of incredible all-in-one A/V receiver options that are not on this list though, and they rarely get mentioned around here. Rotel's RSX-1560 7.1 channel receiver is a dream. The NAD T785 is also great, with HDMI 1.3a, balanced inputs, and beefy dual power supplies.
