Okay, I did search this and did not see a thing come up...
The PS3 is region free, but will it play Japanese PS2/PS1 games? Specifically, could it play the Japan rerelease of Dragon Quest 5 for PS2 or even Dragon Quest IV for PS1 ? |

I think he is specifically talking about games, from what i remember ps1 and ps2 games were region locked as there was the whole NTSC/PAL confliction, both US and Japan use NTSC which ran at more lines than the european PAL system.

PS3s are region locked for DVDs and PS1 CDs. They are only region free regarding PS3 Blu-ray disc based games.
PS1 CDs and PS2 DVDs are typically region locked to their area of release, and the PS3 will NOT circumvent these locks. Ditto for Blu-ray movies. Note, however, that not all PS1 or PS2 games actually got the region locking code on the pressed discs, and not all Blu-ray movies are region locked on the disc either. But under normal circumstances, in the absence of confirmable evidence to the contrary, you should always assume that PS1 and PS2 game discs are region locked. |

If you have a US PS3 you can play -
US blu ray Region free Blu ray (extras in PAL won't play) US DVD US PS1/PS2 games (see below, only 20gb and 60gb are assured of ps2 compatibility) Any PS3 game in the world. It will not play - Any PS1 or PS2 that came out outside of the USA Most PS3's won't play any PS2 games at all, or very few. And for the record. PAL has more lines than NTSC. 576 vs 480. So buy US PS1 games only. If you want to play Japanese PS2 games, buy a Japanese PS2. You could buy a Japanese PS3, since its the same region for Blu ray as the US, PS3 games are region free anyway and there is no voltage conversion needed. So far it hasn't happened yet, but Sony did reserve the right for game developers to region lock PS3 games if they want to. Like I said, it hasn't happened yet, but it is a possibility for future releases.
Every other format game or media type that has a region code has that region code enforced on PS3. |
