Default Seeking Computer Speaker Advice

My Klipsch Promedia 2.1 PC speakers recently died. A quick search shows this is a common problem for these great sounding speakers.

So I bought a Logitech Z-2300 system. The reviews were good and the price was right.

I'm disappointed with these because there is a hum coming from the satelites. The hum is consistant despite the voulume level. I tried different power outlets, different speaker locations, etc.. and still have the hum. I am probabaly going to return these.

My question, then, is does anyone have a PC speaker recommendation for the $80 to $130 price range. They nbeed to be quiet when not active. Thanks...

I would maybe recommend different speaker wire. Long runs (like for the back speakers) combined with cheap wire (hello, PC setups) can pick up interference. I used to have a radio tower outside my old apartment and could hear their signal when my system was off.

Maybe try some different wire- thicker stuff with better shielding. The Z series is a pretty good PC set for the money.

Unfortunately the speaker wires are hard wired into the sateliites.

Well, then you might be able to try and make sure you don't have loops or coils together as that can help pull in interference, make sure they're not near any power cords, and maybe try swapping with the fronts in the short term to see if the buzz follows them or goes away.

Outside of that... I guess return 'em. I have an ancient Creative Soundworks set that I use- it's only 4.1, but it suits me. I know some people repurpose extra speaker equipment into computer speakers- just gotta make sure they're properly sealed against magnetic leakage when they're near the hard drive.

I would recommend another Klipsch setup. My nephew and I both have the 2.1 setup and it sound really excellent for a computer speaker system. I have had my setup for at least 3 years and I have not had one problem. If the system had any issues I am sure Klipsch would have worked them out. I seems as if you were happy with the Klipsch too.

I would say return them! I have this same setup on my computer and they've been fine (going on almost 2 years now). Maybe you just got a lemon!

As an aside...when I bought the Z-2300 it was a toss-up between those and the Klipsch Promedia's as well.

I too have the Z-2300 2.1 system, going on a year now and it's been doing fine so far.

Sorry to hear that. My Pro-media's worked like a tank for years. One finally died because I placed it in a precarious area and my cats knocked it off repeatedly. After a couple of years of being knocked off on a regular basis, it finally physically broke.

I even have a Pro-media and after over five years, it's still working fine.

A popular choice indeed. For me, it was either the Bose or Klipsch. Back then, I thought Bose was alright but knew their speakers sounded like crap to me even before what I know now. The Klipsch was a nice choice for the money in my opinion.
