Default adcom preamp

Hello guys I have a question to ask. My cousin gave me an adcom preamp. However, I don't know nothing about amplifiers for home entertainment. I never own one. Do I need to buy an actual amplifier to use the pre amp? Is adcom a good brand? I don't want to go out and spend more money for another machine.

Do you have remote control with pre-amp?

I can not comment specifically regarding your Pre amp. Adcom is normally considered a good midfi maker of audio components. Not including Televisions and monitiors, as a reference, Sony, Onkyo, Denon, Marantz, Pioneer as examples are normally considered to be low to midfi makers of audio equipment. Though Marantz and Denon (and possibly the Pioneer elite and upper Sony and possibly upper Onkyo) also do offer components that are most definetly midfi and even delve into the range of hi-end equipment.

That is not a Pre amp. That is a power amp. Here is a Stereophile review from 1985 of the Mark I

Here is your Mark II version in Stereophile from 1990:

Hey I got the serial number wrong. Its this one sorry http://forums.audioreview.com/showthread.php?t=17248. Its not as old as I thought it was lol. Hey nature I try plugging it in to my receiver and I heard a really loud pop sound. Luckily it didn't fried my speakers. My receiver is a sony and its really old. I think the person at best buy told me that it already had a amp built in, and I can't use this amp with my receiver.

The only way that you could plug it into the Sony receiver would be if you can separate (through a switch) separating the preamp from the power amps if it is an old receiver.

Thank you it was free lol. That machines does weigh a lot. He also gave me his adcom cd player. Now I just need to figure out a way to do that switch like nature says. Is there a switch I can buy?
I don't want to plug it in again until I know what I'm doing. Might blow the speakers foreal this time lol.

If it is on the back of the Sony it is there. If not, you will not be able to separate the amp section from the preamp. At one time back in the 1970's I had a Marantz 2230 receiver. There was a switch on the back to separate the useage of the preamp from the amp. If it is on the back of the Sony you will have to see the information on the back of the receiver as to what to use where- that is plugging the amp into the pre in versus using the receiver amps with an external preamp. If you have the instructions for the Sony it would help. But, no you can not purchase a switch to separate the the preamp from the amps as far as I know.

Damn it I mine as well upgrade my receiver. Its so old. Hey nature one last question. With all these new technology in audio like 7.1 and stuff would this amp work? Also the bitstream and pcm stuff I been hearing for blu ray movies. I have just bought a samsung 52 inch TOC tv. I got speakers and everything but just an outdated receiver. My cousin also gave me his velodyne subwoofer. If I buy a new onkyo receiver will it be able to do all the things I mention above? If not then I'm just going to give the amp to my dad.

Yes. the amps can be used presuming the receiver has the input capabilities. Certainly the amps could be used for 2 channels with a Pre/Pro amp. With a Pre/Pro and sufficient number of power amps, you will probably have more reserve power and better sound performance.
