Thank you it was free lol. That machines does weigh a lot. He also gave me his adcom cd player. Now I just need to figure out a way to do that switch like nature says. Is there a switch I can buy?
I don't want to plug it in again until I know what I'm doing. Might blow the speakers foreal this time lol.

If it is on the back of the Sony it is there. If not, you will not be able to separate the amp section from the preamp. At one time back in the 1970's I had a Marantz 2230 receiver. There was a switch on the back to separate the useage of the preamp from the amp. If it is on the back of the Sony you will have to see the information on the back of the receiver as to what to use where- that is plugging the amp into the pre in versus using the receiver amps with an external preamp. If you have the instructions for the Sony it would help. But, no you can not purchase a switch to separate the the preamp from the amps as far as I know.

Damn it I mine as well upgrade my receiver. Its so old. Hey nature one last question. With all these new technology in audio like 7.1 and stuff would this amp work? Also the bitstream and pcm stuff I been hearing for blu ray movies. I have just bought a samsung 52 inch TOC tv. I got speakers and everything but just an outdated receiver. My cousin also gave me his velodyne subwoofer. If I buy a new onkyo receiver will it be able to do all the things I mention above? If not then I'm just going to give the amp to my dad.

Yes. the amps can be used presuming the receiver has the input capabilities. Certainly the amps could be used for 2 channels with a Pre/Pro amp. With a Pre/Pro and sufficient number of power amps, you will probably have more reserve power and better sound performance.
