Won't make a difference. PS3 is using bluray. And like it or not, Sony dominates the console market, heck they're responsible for DVDs being popular in Japan....

How can Xbox 2: Next even win against the PS3 if they would just use HD-DVD?

Even so, Sony would still donimate the console market because Xbox doesn't have a lot Japanese games unlike the PS3 (including PS1 and PS2 games) which is a more universal console.

Will people be that bothered about playing games from their PS2 on their PS3. Both my brothers have PS2's, mates etc., yet none of them have ever played PS1 games on their PS2's. It's just like I rarely bother to play N64 games even though I have it plugged into the tv. Also, apparantly the XBox 2 is gaining quite a few more Jap developers this time, mainly because the XBox 2 is supposed to be far smaller, and therefore more appealing to the Jap game,r, and also it's to be released 6 months or so before the competition.

As for HD-DVD, while Blu-Ray seems to have the support of manufacturers, it seems more film studios are currently backing HD-DVD because the discs are cheaper and easier to manufacture. It's feasible you could have 2 disc formats survive as you have 3 console formats, or now 2 handheld formats.
