Hey everyone,
I've bought a nice Samsung LCD television two weeks ago, and I love the sharpness and quality when I play on my xbox. Now I want to have a Blu-ray player that will add the final touch to what I had in mind. I really care a lot for image quality so I would like to hear this from people who know what they're talking about -- you. What should I do? Get the Playstation 3 (80GB) or a Blu-ray player? Of course there are bad ass Blu-ray players far better than the PS3, but I don't want to spend more than the price tag of the PS3 -- $399 So if I were not to spend more than $399, is a PS3 the best choice? I don't care much about the time I have to wait till it loads etc. -- as long it plays with great quality. That is what matters most for me. Thank you so much for your help! ~ |

well it depends on what else you would use it for. if you just want only a blu ray player, then id say go with a sony or panasonic blu ray player and save some money. but if you like playing games too then the ps3 is a no brainer. ps3 is a great console and it has a lot to offer.

Sony S550 or Panasonic BD55 if you're looking for a standalone.

But of course, being able to play games on it is nice, but I don't want to choose for the PS3 while I can have something BETTER for the same price, or even less. If there are only Blu-ray players who are exactly the same as the PS3 when it comes down to quality, I'll go for the PS3. But if there is, for example, a better BD player for even $350, I'd take that one. |

If you don't play games, then don't get the PS3. You can find the standalone Blu-Ray players cheaper than the PS3. Some Wal-Marts still have their Black Friday deals going on with their BRP from overstock. I have the PS3 and it is mainly a Blu-Ray player because there are not enough games out for it that I like, and all multi-platform games I get on the 360 because of the achievements. The PS3 is a good deal though, so don't be afraid to purchase it if you want to.

I disagree. I use my PS3 all the time for more than just watching blu-ray movies and I don't think I've played a game on it for about a year. I find that the PS3 is really great at streaming from a MAC (and I'm sure it will stream just as good from a PC) and it supports DivX files (which doesn't appeal to everyone, I know). So to some people the PS3 is the best player for $400 or less even if they don't want to play games.
I would highly reccommend the PS3 over a stand alone just for the fact that it's a hell of a lot easier to update the firmware than a stand alone. -papaholmz |

I bought my PS3, at launch, specifically to play Blu-ray. For 18 months, I had one game, Resistance, and played only Xbox exclusive games on my 360. For that 18 months, I was totally satisfied with my purchase (at $600 too). Then I got back into gaming on the PS3 by buying MLB 08, Tim Crisis 4 WipEout HD and Uncharted. I thank myself everyday that I went with a PS3 and it eventually turned my icy PS hating heart back into the 1995 PlayStation lover that I once was (The Dreamcast died under Sony's might which is why I skipped out on the PS2).

Remember that this forum did a comparison to help new blu's in deciding. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...40#post1370240 check it out it may help. As far as the price tag of the ps3 check this out http://www.sonyrewards.com/en/gatewa...nk=sr150nowps3 and my last words becuase I just can't help being an @$!hole. The PS3 doesn't like to be used as a bluray player it's to good for just that. The next time you tell people not to buy a PS3 you're keeping some poor sap from turning a PS3 into a one trick pony. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

If you're any kind of a gamer, or live with someone who is, then the PS3 is the better choice. If you're not a gamer and understand that you'll be losing a great feature by not going with the PS3, than a stand alone player would be fine.
