Well, it's a poll, I have lots of "popular" box sets that I am thinking of selling while they're worth something
Rocky boxset Superman boxset X-Men boxset Spiderman I/II set Star Wars I-VI Then there's movies I just can't see NOT going blu-ray, Advent Children, Spirits Within, Snakes on a Plane, Memoirs of a Geisha, so I am just thinking of getting rid of everything that will most likely see itself on bluray and of course, keeping all the anime, kids movies, teen movies, "chick flicks", animated movies, martial arts movies, foreign movies, etc that probably won't be on bluray in ages So what are you guys doing? |

Well I have quite a few DVD's and like you said, there's the possiblity not all of them will come out on bluray. I sell the DVD's I have as they come out on bluray. That way not only do I have the best possible quality of the movie, I have the ones that didnt make the blu-cut e.g. The Monster Squad. A rare DVD to own that I really, and I stress REALLY, hope one day is restored for bluray...but most likely won't. I don't really care about the depreciated value of movies over time...money is not an option to a movie collector such as myself.

I've only replaced a few dvds so far. I pick up everything now in Blu ray and will be replacing dvds here and there, but replacing everything I have is not top priority, not with over 400 dvds.
The ones I replace with Blu ray I'll be super happy, but I am not going to complain about having the dvds I do. |

I've only replaced a few titles so far (the Amazon sale helped out with that), but I'm not planning on repurchasing everything. In reality I would probably never be able to replace my entire collection anyway. A large part of my collection is in old B/W films which may never see Blu-ray. Lots of Universal and Warner classics like the Classic Monsters, gangster films, Marx Brothers, Abbott & Costello, etc. When I do repurchase something on BD, I mail the title I'm replacing off to my Dad so no waste. He's a movie buff also, but will probably never go HD. It took forever to get him to can the VCR and he held out longer than most on giving up his Betamax

Regardless of format I have always upgraded my titles. I still have Laserdisc, DVD’s, and D-VHS titles in my collection since they are not on BLU-RAY yet. If and when a title is announced on BLU-RAY that I already own I stick my old Laserdisc or DVD’s on EBAY. My goal is to have the best quality version of a movie regardless of format.
I have not purchased HD-DVD Universal titles yet; I am waiting 9-12 months to see if they announce BLU-RAY. Worse case scenario I might purchase a universal player or HD-DVD player one day. I don’t mind paying $1500 for a high end BLU-RAY player for the main home theater room and maybe one day I will purchase a high-end universal player or HD-DVD player for the main home theater room. What I refuse to do is purchase both a BLU-RAY player and HD-DVD player for every room in the house. At some point I am going to make a decision to replace all my DVD players in my house with either a $400 BLU-RAY player or a working universal player if and when they come on the market. The average consumer is like me. They are not going to purchase both a BLU-RAY player and HD-DVD player for every room in the house. They will wait until there is a clear winner in the format war which most likely will be BLU-RAY. When BLU-RAY players are sold between $300-$400 families will start to replace all the DVD players in their house. Depending on peoples income level some families might wait a few years. One day BLU-RAY players will be under $200 and just about everyone will be able to afford to upgrade to BLU-RAY. In 5 years BLU-RAY players should be around $50. ** I guess my main point is some people have large families and when there is only one person in the house with a BLU-RAY player and one purchases a movie on BLU-RAY other people in the house will complain since they can not watch it in their room on the DVD player. Most families are not going to build a duplicate library of movies. The best long term solution is for everyone to replace their DVD players with a BLU-RAY player ** In a nightmare scenario if Universal Studios decides too always stay HD-DVD exclusive, then the best solution would be low cost universal players for everyone. If there was a $500 Universal player on the market that had 1080P/24 output with full HD-DVD support many people would purchase such a machine just to watch Universal Studio releases. I am a movie collector and I would be interested in such a feature if Universal Studios stays exclusive. |

TO be real honest, I could care less about my 300+ DVD's anymore. I'd get rid of them all tomorrow except I have a huge DVD rack that would then Be Bear. As I continue to fill it with next gen optical formats I will phase out the 480i crap.

I plan on getting BDs for all my favorite films as they come. Once I get them, I will sell off the DVDs. That is unless, like in the case of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the producer pulled a stupid and put fewer features on the Blu-Ray version.

There is no way I would think about replacing all my discs and selling them. First of all you can't sell DVD's anywhere for shit already. They sell for maybe 3-5 dollars on average. It's not worth the hastle of starting all over, having to rebuy the discs, wait til they come out, and spend $20 more then what I'm getting back. It's really a no brainer unless you have a lot of money that can be just thrown around.

Aside from my interest in cinema, I also have a very healthy (unhealthy?) interest in vintage and modern television. There are loads of DVDs I have that will never in a million years see the light of day on Blu-ray or HD-DVD - and to be honest, with many of the programmes being made on videotape rather than film, there's nothing to be gained from HD restorations. So, I'll always have a large collection of DVDs - it's just the cinema collection that I'll be looking to improve with HD versions.
I've already shifted a good number of replaced or likely to be replaced movie DVDs on Amazon.co.uk, but as has been said, it's difficult to get a good price for second hand DVDs these days. It's the downside of DVD's massive popularity, I suppose. (But it also means, on the other side of the coin, that occasionally I can pick up a real bargain!) |

As mentioned, DVD's are already mostly worthless. Many new DVD's are often $5-6, including some titles being released on Blu-ray while used DVD's are easily found for $3-$7.50 including the entire Blu-ray library of titles. I have sold about 100 DVD's in the past 2 months and listed about 125 on eBay with 25 not even getting a bid. The low price started before the HD formats. Will it get even worse for the used DVD market? I don't know.
Of course if you aren't going to watch them, I would say they won't increase in value so sell now. I did get $41 for a rare DVD, "FM", but most of the 100 I sold were sold for around $1 plus $3.99 shipping, a few for a $.01 and a few more more than a $1. It is barely worth the walk to the mail box to ship them. Chris Last edited by Chris Gerhard; 03-31-2007 at 10:38 AM. |

I haven't bought a DVD since July. That's about the same time I started to filter them out of here, albeit gradually.
Despite the bugs and flaws, the picture and sound quality from my 30 some odd day HD-DVD beta test time spoiled me forever. When it actually worked. ![]() So... by the time I waited for Blu-Ray to really get its act together, and for the PS3, I basically had started to gradually filter out any titles that I saw confirmed for BD. When the PS3 came out, I basically brought in enough DVD's, old games, and other odds and ends that I was only out of pocket maybe $80 or so for the 60GB PS3. It was over $500 worth of trade in value. I figure: If I Ebay or try and sell the DVDs by some other method?...After Ebay takes their fees, Pay Pal possibly takes theirs, and I pay shipping, I'm pretty close to the same amount of value on the DVDs that I would get just trading them in at a place like EB or Gamestop anyways with a whole lot less hassle. So DVD's are basically game currency for me or even stray BD titles that EB/GS sell. DVD's really don't have much more value past that since they're so common and easy to come by. Since November I've weeded down my collection considerably. I've never owned more than 150-200 DVD's tops just because I've been fairly picky about what I buy and I've known for a few years that HD was inevitable and that's what I was waiting for. I'd say I'm down to less than 50 DVD's right now. I basically am at a point now where I get rid of DVD's when their BD counterpart is in my hands. |
