Default Warner Rumor

Over at HDD.com I keep reading threads about how Warner is calling this winter do or die yet I can't find where they are getting this information from, is this just more FUD, or is there something actually to this, its kinda worrying if so.

Thanks for any answers you guys have.

Yep, it is widely expected that Warner Bros. is going to announce at CES that they are leaving the movie and home video business, and instead opening up a chain of fast food restaurants.

C'mon. Some of the people over there are not over the format war. Don't worry about it...

Nobody ever defines what "do" means. So, it conveniently allows whatever happens to be insufficient.

The Dark Knight is going to ship 1.2 million units for Warner. If that isn't already "do" then clearly the expectations are insane and unreachable.

It seems that everything started with this :

Quote:
"Hollywood studios believe that sub-$200 Blu-ray players combined with more Blu-ray exposure in retail stores will help the format finally take off this holiday season: Over $25 million will be spent to push DVD and Blu-ray holiday releases, like "Wall-E," "Hancock," and "The Dark Knight." The latter is well on its way to become the most pirated movie of 2008. Even studio execs see this holiday season as Blu-ray's last chance. "We think this is a do-or-die time for Blu-ray," Warner Home Video president Ron Sanders told the New York Times."

Whenever you read a thread title like that you should always consider two things.

1. Who started the thread? I can guarantee you it will be one of three or four blockheads.
2. What was linked. I can almost guarantee you it will be a blog from a site with a more extreme view of Blu-ray than those three or four blockheads have.

Those guys pegged it.

Warner is going to drop a .4 billion dollar business (quite likely to be half billion by end of 2008) in which they already have the majority of the up-front costs out of the way.

It's so obvious how could anyone NOT see it.

Well maybe if WB would start LISTENING to the CONSUMER and put LOSSLESS tracks on ALL of their titles, then this wouldn't even be an issue. But right now, lots of people aren't buying or upgrading their titles since most of them just have Dolby Digital 5.1.

Total lifetime shipment projections on TDK are close to 2.5m. It is the title that will bring the masses into the Blu-ray fold. Especially with the IMAX/35mm interchanges Nolan has used for the releases.

I agree with you that it'll bring blu-ray into the fold. However, since you mentioned the shifting ratios, I can only picture how many people are going to be watching this movie on their new players, see the ratio switch, think they screwed something up, start it over, and have it again and then blame the player not realizing that it's the movie. Personally, I'd like to observe this just once and laugh, as I'm sure it's bound to happen. Also, I'm pretty sure the dvd just has a standard 2.4 ratio, unless I'm mistaken.

WOW! That is amazing.

In April 2007 it was announced that Blu-ray had hit the 1 million disc units sold mark.

Now, a little over 1.5 years later, we have initial shipments of 1.2 million and projections of a total of 2.5 million FOR ONE TITLE.

Warner must be very upset.

Well, you got to remember that WB probably aren't used to the pounding they are getting from the Blu-ray enthusiasts like ourselves so when they say something to disparage Blu-ray it will be because they are trying to shut us all up. They think that by saying everything is bad with Blu-ray we will all shut up and be thankful WB are even bothering with it, but the truth is, we know better.

WB used to be the people's champion when it came to DVD, they were the studio leading the way, making noises and forcing the rest to pledge their support and increase the standard. It seems they have lost their way and the HD DVD side still get their way on quality. Hell, I had my gf ask me whether we were watching the DVD if HP when I bought it even though it was the BD because it was so smooth and lacking in detail.

WB moaning about Blu-ray has nothing to do with Blu-ray itself and more to do with their new-found situation. I mean do you hear the original Blu-ray studios ever complain that Blu-ray is doing badly? I haven't heard anything from Disney, Fox, or Sony externally or internally about any perceived demise of Blu-ray. Even Uni and Paramount are extremely bullish on Blu-ray sales, people at Paramount are extremely pleased with Iron Man, a similarly received movie like 300 which was released a year and three months ago saw saw shipments of 250k first week across both formats, Iron Man was north of 800k on a single format. That's phenomenal growth by any measure...
