Default Heh, lamp finally died

So the lamp on my Samsung HLM507W finally died - got a new one coming in today to replace it (thankfully it's not one of the Samsungs that needs professional service to replace it).

I have to say, the old girl had a pretty good run - I think I got the TV around 2002/2003 so the bulb was a good 5-6 yrs old.

Wow that Is a good run as I think they say usually ur good for 3-4 years or so. I've been thinking about going to where I bought my TV and getting the bulb, just so I Know I have it, if/when mine goes. It's not that old yet but if they'll let me take it -- whether I say I just want it to have or have to make up a story that it died, we'll see. -- then I will do so. I need to go over my Warranty paperwork again to see when it ends - in case they go Under with all these other Audio places (C. City, Tweeter Etc.) filing for Chapter 11 or whatever.

Hello P A KID:

Kindly post your experience with replacing the the bulb.

I've got a Samsung 50 " HLN 5065W that is now 5 years old and still going strong but I suspect I'm on borrowed time so it would be interesting to hear how it went in terms of ease of installation.

Did you get the just the " bulb " or the " bulb + mounting bracket " ??????

Thanks in advance.

I have a Sammy 67" DLP that is about two years old and still going strong. I have heard lots of time approximations of how long the bulb may last but wasn't going to just wait until it dies right before the Super Bowl, World Series, etc, so I went out and got a replacement bulb/housing that is ready to be installed when needed.

I saw the video of how to replace the bulb on Samsung's website and it seems pretty straight forward and shouldn't take no more than 20 min.

I bought the whole thing (bulb + bracket). Got it off Amazon for just under 150 (gotta love Prime overnight shipping ). I didn't think to just go the bulb route, but to be honest I'm not sure I would have wanted to futz with it.

It's coming in tonight so I'll let you know tomorrow.

The first real indications that it was going was that it would cycle through the start up period twice (then three times) before turning on. Finally yesterday it went to the bulb failure indicator (all three lights blinking) and would not turn on at all.

Now I'm just praying nothing else goes - I'm pretty sure the color wheel ball bearings are out of balance, but I may just wait until it actually affects the picture to replace them - that one is going to require service as I understand it.

For much of that time it was our primary TV. When I got a newer Sony about a year ago the Samsung moved to the bedroom (to my wife's annoyance - it's too big) and still sees consistent use of 2-4 hours a day.

I get the feeling that the early DLPs were made with much better (and much more expensive) bulbs that are commonly used today. When I got the TV I chose that because I played a lot of Xbox, didn't want burn in, and had the spare cash to splurge. Thing was between 4-5 grand back then.

When I first came here and heard about the bulb life people expected here I suddenly felt like I was living on borrowed time.

Just buy the bulb. The casing sent to me was the wrong one even though the picture showed the right one and it says it's for the right part. I had to swap it into the old casing anyway.

I'm actually looking at buying just another bulb for cheap, putting it back into the new casing, and return it.

Huh? TV is working like new again now - why in gods name would I get rid of it?

Not to mention at the moment it's my bedroom TV - the newer 60 inch Sony I got for under a grand 12/31/07 is the living room TV.

Man, how quickly we all line up to throw away money huh? Remember the days of CRT TVs that lasted 20-40 years?

Wow, that is a pretty impressive run. I had to replace mine after only 2 years. Do you use the tv other than watch movies? just wondering how you manage to get so much out of it.

How old was your TV - like I mentioned, I suspect the earlier DLPs (and I was a very early adopter with that one) were build with longer lasting bulbs.

(I harbor no illusions - now that it went I'll probably be on a 2-3 year schedule like everyone else)

I got it May 5th 2006, so its going to be 3 years old....but good thing that i got was that i got the generation where you don't need a service person to change the bulb, its really simple....but i use the tv for movies, games and to watch tv, so its on most of the day...
