So what movie companies have jumped aboard the BD bandwagon so far? I know that Columbia Tristar (division of Sony Entertainment) and 20th Century Fox (to an extent) will be utilising BD-ROM.... but I also read recently that Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros. Studios have all signed up for HD-DVD-ROM support.
Looks like HD DVD have a head start there... and from the point of a BD supporter it doesn't look too good at the moment. http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/10981 |

While it still wouldn't be definite, if Disney ends up supporting HD-DVD the war may be over. However, if Disney chooses Blu-ray well then that'll solidify Blu-ray in the marketplace for many years to come.
![]() Largest studios: 1. Columbia (with recent MGM purchase) 2. Warner 3. Disney All of the other studios are a good deal smaller in movie catalog size and thus, there will be less consequences in their decisions of which format to support. |

So basically what you're saying is that there is a 'majority-rules' kind of system in place at the moment... being if two of those three previously mentioned big studios side with one of the next-gen formats - then that format will surely take out supremacy in the movie market... I see.
So it's basically all down to Disney and their affiliation now. (Though I am curious, I had thought that Universal Studios was a contender for having a large catalogue size as well...) EDIT (10/12/04): It seems that our discussions have a result. Disney is on the Blu-ray bandwagon! Yay! |

At the end of the day, (football cliche I know), surely people will buy into the format that gives them the best selection of titles. It matters little that more manufacturers are making Blu-Ray machines at the moment, if the movie studios decide to back HD-DVD BR won't have a chance. Though I suppose if more BR machines are sold, studios may switch alliegence and release films on BR or both. Perhaps they could release discs that are dual format somehow. i.e. layers for both formats on the same side of the disc, or on either side like a flipper!?. Otherwise players that are dual format, (and expensive) could be the way things go if both format has equal movie support. Still, it's likely I'll be buying a PS3 at launch so that will do me for BR playback initially. Perhaps the XBox 2 will have HD-DVD and I'll have both formats covered.
All rampant speculation. Who knows which format will suceed. Though I would hope it's BR mainly due to it's higher capacity/potential capacity, (8 layer 200GB disc or more). |
