Default Dismal retail sales to drive deals in early '09?

The worst holiday spending spree in 40 years may just make for some pretty awesome sales in early 2009.

Quite a few of us are waiting on the sidelines for TVs, BD players, BDs and the like...juts wondering what other fence sitters are thinking...as far as diving in and making their purchase in the immediate or near-term future?

i only perused the article, but to me it was ALL about in-store sales. which have been hindered by online sales for the past few years... i here all this doom saying but i don't bite or buy into it until someone posts the sales numbers for combined online and in-store sales. the market can no longer just be measured by in-store traffic because online sales have been strong for the past few years and on the rise in the past few years (don't know about this season).

Amazon did state that this year was their best holiday season ever. So you may be right that online sales have cannibalized in-store sales to an extent. However, the cross-section of sales decline seems to be irrespective of retailer type...which seems to suggest a definitive decline in holiday spending.

Amazon said it was best holiday ever in terms of # of orders, but didn't say anything about $ spent - so there is some speculation that people were ordering smaller/cheaper things.

Regardless, I'd like to see cheaper Blu-Rays - I don't see any solid reason why an older movie already released in 4 other formats should be any more than $15 (something like The Thing), especially if you aren't putting anything new on the disc content wise.
