Default Letterbox vs. full screen

I just bought my first 1080p lcd and blu-ray player. The 3 movies I played so far display in letterbox instead of full screen. Why? But what about this? The Dark Night scene one is in full screen (where they rob the bank(, but the scenes after that are letterbox with the black lines at the top adnd bottom of the screen. What can I do do to get full screen for all Blu-ray movies? Thanks. I am a newbie, so be patient. Trip

The full screen shots in TDK were shot for IMAX. The only way for you to make letterbox movies full screen is by zooming in, which is not recommended.

Thank you. After I posted my question, I read prior posts which also answered my question. The bars are hear to stay I guess, however, I still prefer full screen regardless of the directors artistic intent. Oh well.
