Default LCD vs DLP

I currently own 720p/1080i DLP, I like the picture... especially with Blu-ray. I plan on upgrading to 1080p soon but I'm not sure which type to get. I go through the big box stores and most LCDs look great, however I was just a Costco and they had a 60+ inch DLP on display that looked good too.

Could you LCD aficionados give some insight and advice on either format.

Thanks.

Here are what I consider to the benefits of each:

DLP:
Price to Size ratio
Black level

LCD:
Flat and wall-mountable
Very Bright with little to no reflection

In my opinion when properly set-up they both can deliver excellent picture quality with a slight edge to DLP in general for better black levels. Newer more expensive LCD's may be able to match or exceed DLP in black level, but not at comparable prices(outside of the laservue, which they can't match).

My preference of dislpay is Plasma, because they provide the best black level performance but at a premium of price.

If you plan on going towards 60" I would suggest DLP as your best value, unless of course you include the WAF.

Take into consideration that they all but stopped making dlps. Check out the thread "dlp is a dying technology cause you cant hang it on a wall" or something like that

If well calibrated DLP give you way more bang for the buck....

I own both, and love my DLP, prefer to watch sports on it always....

Games sometimes i would go with the lcd, but if the refresh rate of your new
dlp is low, that could change...

Really i'd go with either based on whichever deal is the best....

It's a Samsung 1080p LED DLP, it comes with the, or a matching stand. I think the 72 inch is something like $1799.99 and the 61 inch is $1399.99.

So what you people are saying is this DLP can be as good or even better than some of the leading LCDs?

Yeah, I just read the CNET review and he liked it as well.

Now comes the biggest obstacle... the wife She mentioned we should get 32 in LCD for the basement that was on sale during a Boxing Day sale (Canadian Black Friday equivalent). I said... well, we should just upgrade the livingroom TV and move the 46in downstairs... she replied, I'll think about it , good enough for me.

Thanks peeps.

Definitely go with the DLP for those prices. The LED ones are great and you don't have to worry about the bulbs burning out on you. Get the 73" if you have the room for it!

There are a lot of advantages to these LED-illuminated DLP sets -- from all manufacturers.

The new LED sets have:
-- Thin cabinets (my 56" is only 15" deep)
-- Great energy efficiency (LED's instead of power-hungry projector-lamp assemblies)
-- Awesome brightness and contrast
-- Great color
-- No rainbow effect (Modulated red, green, and blue LED's instead of a synchronized color wheel)
-- Thinnest surrounding cabinet frame (typically only 1/2 inch on sides and top)
-- Tremendous range of screen sizes (50" to 73")
-- Wonderfully broad viewing angle
-- Larger screen size for the price than any other type ('till you get into huge screens and projectors)

I wouldn't criticize the other types as I have never owned one of them. Each type of set has its pros and cons. Weigh them carefully and enjoy whatever type is best for you.
