Default Sammy HLS5087 & ps3 questions.

So I replaced my sony kdf42we655 (788p) with a Sammy 50HLS5087 and I had always used component video on my old tv, but decided to give HDMI a whirl on the new tv, mainly because for some reason the ps3 will output 1080p over component, until it comes to BD playback...then it's only 1080i.
So anyways...I hooked up an HDMI cable and noticed something disturbing almost immediately. The dashboard has Greyish blacks and isn't as eyepopping over HDMI. Once you start a movie, it looks fine...but doing anything on the dashboard it seems like the brightness is kicked up from the ps3. Is this a known issue? I switched back to component but left the HDMI connected in case they remedy this...or I figure something out.
Also, I can not tell a difference between 1080i & 1080p on my native 1080p set.

It was an easy choice, especially when they are side by side (as they were for a while in my store). The SXRD has no where near the Black levels or Brightness of this set, and the picture seems "soft" for my taste...and this is comming from a guy who swore by sony up until now.

My good friend Provenflipper also has this unit, and is very happy with his...so that helped make my decision.

Also, a review wich I can't find at the moment where it went up against the sxrd head to head it lost (last year)Only because some of the reviewers loved DNie others disliked it, but this year The Samsung WON!...because of defeatable DNie.

^^I think that was Home Theater Magazine's shootout either 1 or 2 issues ago. You probably can go on their site and call it up.

is it that time of the month/year where the dashboard is grey?

i know you're not a dunce, but is it safe to assume that you noticed a difference between the component and hdmi?

you know how it goes, cover the bases first...

right now i'm liking the color/blacks from component on this one source. I know it's dashboard related because once the movie starts...the blacks are fine, if I watch a trailer from the dashboard...or the dashboard itself, it's washed out looking (overly brightened). If I adjust the brightness down I can correct it, but then when I load the BD it's too dark. Component gives a better balance, but at the loss of progressive.

^^ This would concern me a little bit simply because component is on its way out ultimately.

I'd see about buying the new HQV or Avia calibration discs when they come out (if they aren't out already) or consider saving up for an ISF job.

I must admit that I'm a little surprised that you found this TV to be better than the SXRDs but maybe it is. *shrugs*

The Sammy's calibrate to perfection. The Sony's almost perfect. I've had problems with Samsung dlp's with the light engine breaking down, to short bulb life. I also see rainbows on dlp sets. The Sony SXRD is a no brainer for me. Retail floor comparisons are not how you should be shopping for any monitor.

Brian and I stared at the Sammy DLPs vs the SXRDs for months on end and came to the same conclusion, the Sammy looks better than the standard SXRDs. We watched them side by side on many different feeds, including Blu-ray. The XBR is a totally different animal, but the standard ones don't quite measure up to the SXRD in our opinion. I was pleasantly surprised with this TV and only planned on having it for about a year, but due to the quality of the picture, it will hold me over until OLED or some other technology becomes more viable.

I've never hooked my PS3 up using component as everything runs through my receiver and to the TV through HDMI, but I can say that the blacks look better in movies, than they do in the dashboard.

Sort of off topic, but is it me or is the Spiderman 3 trailer the best looking trailer that has ever graced the PS store?

I change my Tv's so much, this TV probably won't see it past the first bulb. I had my kdf42we655 for nearly two years and it only had 1550 hours on it.

Ok, hold on to your hat, i found the cure for this:

Here's my original post,

Ok I figured out the remedy, so that your Dashboard has fabulous blacks...and so that you don't get a dark picture when you select BD playback.

1st, go into the BD/DVD setting and select RGB. At first glance this will have no effect on the dashboard...It's not suppossed to. Put on a BD movie, and now you will notice it is noticeably brighter. Well now al you have to do is adjust your brightness. I found there is about a 13 click difference between this and my other inputs. My other inputs are set to brightness 45, this input is at 32. My blacks are great now, I can enjoy native 1080p now...and quite frankly...I couldn't be happier! This is a fabulous set

I actually can tell now...but not so much in "detail" I noticed it mainly on fabric or clothing on actors. It would seem to shimmy and shimmer on 1080i. With 1080p it's very smooth and lifelike now. Also during the Movie Night at the Museum, the black furniture seemed to put off a reflection that would shimmer and was quite distracting on 1080i, this is what prompted me to fool around with settings and how I came to the fix for the overly bright Dashboard on the PS3 with HDMI...

Anyways...if anyone else experiences issues like this on their sets, this is likely the issue for them as well.

Mods, we may want to change the title to:

PS3 Dashboard/BD playback Brightness uneven on HDMI

Or something to that effect ^^^^

Thanks!
Brian

UPDATE:

with the ps3 firmware updated to ver 1.81 you can now select RGB to full in the display setting category and it sticks. You will now notice previous settings (brightness at 32) is too dark.
Bump brightness up to 45, and set contrast to 50.
