Default How to move game data to new PS3?

Forgive if this is a n00b question, but I am getting a new PS3 in the next day or so and I want to move all of my save game data/PSN ID from the old machine to the new machine. Is there a way to do this?

Ive read something about deactivating the old one and then logging in with the new one?

Also, what prep should I do to my old PS3 before selling it?

Many thanks in advance.

i haven't gotten my feet wet in this dept., but to move your saves, yuo just have to copy them onto a USB or some sort of external storage (SD, CF, jump drive, etc etc)
then just paste them back over to your new PS3.

also for your PSN ID, it's as simple as logging in... you can redownload all your purchases or anything in your history.
that is of course assuming you are logged off from the other console as i imagine you can't be logged on to your PSN ID in 2 places.

I think when you go to the game data folder and push the triangle, it should let you copy the save data. But I've never done this. You would copy it to something like an SD card and then reverse the process on the new PS3.

I back-up my saves every few weeks to my SD card, I suppose you could move them to that, though I haven't had to restore them, so that option may or may not be there.

Copy game saves to a USB device. Be aware that some games are copy-protected and won't transfer. Then copy them back when you get the new system. Create the new user accounts the same as your existing system so they land in the same/right place when you copy them back.

Make sure you go into Account Management and Deactivate the system you are selling. This makes sure you will still be allowed to D/L content on up to 5 PS3's by putting it back into your pool. Think long term even if you don't have that many now ..

Then you may want to delete any photos, music etc..

Make sure you delete the local user accounts.. because if you leave them and you have auto-login enabled the new owner could get into your PSN accounts. There are some system reset options I don't remember off hand that may clear some of these automatically .. but double-check to make sure any user accounts and passwords have been cleared/deleted.

On your new system just create new user accounts and associate it/them with your existing PSN account(s) by signing up again on the new machine .. using the same email address(es) and password(s) you used on your existing machine.

Hopefully you remember the password you used for your PSN account(s). If you don't and are currently using auto-login .. make sure you go in on the existing system use it to change the PSN password(s) to something you will remember/be able to use on the new system ..write them down.

P.S. If your play around with the reset/drive format utilities make sure you at least do the game save copies first. Seems obvious but sometimes we play around and then go o sh*t. The user accounts are kept in firmware not the hard drive so I think you have to delete them even you reformat the drive.

There is a backup utility on the XMB, under the System section. Use that, along with an external hard drive formatted in FAT32 to back it up, then use the restore function on your other PS3, and then format the drive of your first PS3 before you sell it.

Default For copy protected games

To get copy protected games you will have to take both hard drives attached them to a computer, and use a bit ghost copy program. something like g4u http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/, or some commercial software like norton ghost should work.

If your new hd is the same size, then it should be pretty easy. if the new hd is bigger, then afterward you'll have to resize the file system in order to gain the additional space.

In theory it should work as long as the file system the ps3 uses is a common format.

I haven't tried it myself, but in theory it should work

No, you don't, airwedge1. There's a backup utility that will do it for you. The only thing is that you'll need a third, external HDD.

Yep don't forget to format prior to selling it. You wouldn't want the buyer to discover your collection of video porn in his new machine

Yeah I hadn't tried the restore across machines (or at least couldn't remember if I did) but of course it should work. I don't think copy-protected games/content get restored to a different machine.

Also .. does the format reset the user accounts and passwords? I didn't think it did because they are stored in the firmware so he needs to make sure they are cleared.

I have no idea, actually, since I've never formatted my PS3, but I just assumed they would wipe all user accounts on the machine. The PSN accounts, of course, would not be touched, as they are server-side.

I'd say check, just in case.

Also, I don't think I've run into any copy-protected content, but I would assume that the backup/restore utility would just copy the entire disc image.

Again, after you restore, make sure to check that everything is there before you format.

I don't think it does because there a warnings when making a backup or restore about not all content blah blah .. I wrote my findings last year but I'm getting old and can't remember the conclusions..

Hi i'm new to this, i created a master account for my mum on my user on th ps3, now i cant sign in with my sub account. So i made a new user which has my account on and copied the game data from one user to the other. But when i started little big planet, it said i couldnt unlock any trophies.

i was just wondering, if i copied the data to a usb device, formatted the ps3, made a user with my psn account, when i copied the game data back, would the trophies come with it, and would it let me unlock new ones

You can only use the data from the account the saved game data was created from. It cannot be used across sub-accounts/profiles.

All i tried to do is copy the data and hope that the trophies came too, because i cant un-associate my user with my mums axxount unless i delete it, and if delete it i lose all data, so if i copy the data to usb, delete the user, the copy the data back, will i still have my trophies, and be able to unlock new ones?

Are you using the same PSN account as your mum's? If so then you'll be able to use that data. If not, then you will not be able to at all.
