Default HBO's The Wire on BD?

even though it's 4:3, i can't wait to get all five seasons of the wire on bd (not that there is one now). after mst3k, it's the greatest show in tv history.

anyone have a guess? mine is: not for a loooong time.

They didn't do the masters in HD for The Wire.

I'm not sure the show is a big enough moneymaker for HBO to justify doing a re-telecine at 1080p (since it was, of course, shot on film). Even then it would probably end up being pillarboxed, as David Simon (creator and showrunner) feels that the 4:3 frame suits the show better than 16:9. (I believe HBO had considered moving to HD prior to season 4 but Simon declined for this and other reasons)

And it was a horrible decision on his part. But I'll let it slide since I truly feel that it is one of the best pieces of drama ever committed to film.

There would be no point in doing a BD release for The Wire since it was always a SD show. Just go ahead and get the full series on DVD.

How has it turned out so far?

I thought the first season was great! I can't remember if I watched any of the second season or not. I thought the show kinda went down hill and I eventually lost interest. Kinda like the Sopranos.

This would be great.

I wish HBO would just make all their shows on Blu. Especially The Sopranos and Oz.

IMO it went a little soft in Season 2, but picked up in the remaining seasons and finished up all of the story threads started by Season 1.

I could not remember what happened at all - I just remember it kinda got boring. Then I dropped it. Thanks for the info though. Might give it another look later on.

Season 2 was the black sheep of the family, and in fairness, I still enjoyed it. But season 3 goes back to the Stringer Bell/Baltimore drug trade again and it also introduces a more vicious group of dealers who become mainstays. Omar plays a huge role in the rest of the seasons as well.

And its nothing like the fizzle that the Sopranos ended up being. David Simon embraced his work and didn't leave 47 unanswered threads floating around along with one of the worst and anti-climactic endings ever.
